A NEARLY 2,000-year-old silver ring, found on a ploughed North Lincolnshire field, was declared to be treasure by North Lincolnshire coroner Paul Kelly.

The Roman ring was discovered by Winteringham metal detecting enthusiast Ken Jacobs on October 16, 2008.

Coroner's officer Martin Armstrong told the Pittwood House inquiry: "The gentleman was metal detecting on ploughed land. It was found in the Winteringham area."

Mr Armstrong said a report about the artefact was commissioned by the British Museum. And, he said: "The find appears to qualify as treasure."

The roman ring, which weighed 5.62 grams and is believed to be 1,800 years old, was examined by Dr Richard Hobbs, the curator of the Romano-British collection at the British Museum.

Mr Kelly recorded the ring as treasure and said his finding would be transmitted to the British Museum.

It will then be valued and the valuation amount will be divided equally between Mr Jacobs and the landowner Ron Ogg.

Mr Jacobs said: "I don't think it's of great value, I'm guessing it's about £200 tops. But it's in lovely condition," he said.
