£1.3bn turnover is a Nisa little earner
LEADING Scunthorpe business Nisa-Today's is set to smash through a record £1.3-billion turnover target for the year.
And the firm has underlined its commitment to Scunthorpe for several years to come.
The major buying group announced strong growth in its six- month trading update for April to September this year.
Company sales were up 11.84 per cent in value terms to £651.4-million and 6.6 per cent in volume to 51.3-million cases.
This puts the Normanby Enterprise Park business on track to significantly exceed its target of £1.3-billion turnover for the year and to pass the 100-million cases milestone through its central distribution operation by the end of March next year.
This operation includes the 625,000sqft (17 acres) ambient warehouse in Scunthorpe – a £30-million investment launched in October, 2005.
A total of 182 new stores have joined Nisa so far this year with 136 leaving, meaning the number of stores in Nisa membership is up by 46.
This period of success has also seen the Nisa Symbol Group – the number of stores that are actually branded with the Nisa name – reach the 600 mark, with growth of 25.4 per cent.
There are more than 5,000 stores in Nisa membership, stretching as far as southern Ireland and the Channel Islands.
In addition, rebates to members of Nisa-Today's – which are based on loyalty and other factors – were up 15 per cent year-on-year and earlier this year the company paid out a £500,000 surplus to members for the second year in a row. Nisa-Today's chief executive officer, Neil Turton, said: "All areas of the business are performing very well.
It seems evident that consumers are returning to vibrant local stores for their shopping needs.
"There have been some significant achievements for Nisa-Today's so far this year, perhaps most notably the placing of our future distribution contracts with DHL, which extends our commitment to the Scunthorpe area until 2018 and provides future stability to the workforce and ensures that it makes a significant contribution to the local economy."
Some 250 people work for Nisa-Today's in Scunthorpe, but there are also more than 800 staff indirectly employed in the warehouse.

“Well said Pat, these Polish dont mind working doing the jobs that so many jobless, lazy Scunthonians refuse to do. Theyd rather claim their giro, and watch Jeremy Kyle.
Wiggy seems to be the person against all foreigners(except his passed away family friend) and always complains when an article mentions the police.”

“Wiggy, Why is the workforce 80% Polish ?. Answer Because 80% of the local workforce in Scunthorpe don't want to work. They find it easier getting up in the morning in time for Jeremy Kyle and spend the rest of the day doing sod all else. If people want a job in Scunthorpe it won't take them long.
