MOTORISTS have been warned they could have been hit with £25,000 worth of fines after North Lincolnshire Council's new parking enforcement team carried out a dummy run.

The new 14-strong army of Civil Enforcement Officers (CEOs) slapped 500 warning notices on vehicles in the two weeks before they hit the streets for the first time yesterday since taking over parking enforcement from Humberside Police.

The warning notices were placed on vehicles which were parked illegally and could have resulted in fines of between £50 and £70.

Cllr Bernard Regan, cabinet member for highways and planning at North Lincolnshire Council, said: "We must remember that the vast majority of people do park properly.

"And if you park correctly, you've nothing to worry about.

"But we won't hesitate to issue penalty notices to bad drivers. So make sure you park safely and legally."

In preparation for their debut, the team dished out the warning notices mainly to people who had parked on double yellow lines, overstayed their time limit, or returned to parking bays before they are allowed.

Humberside Police said in the whole of 2009, officers issued 1,081 tickets in North Lincolnshire, which is around 20 a week.

“This is a brilliant idea and way overdue. There are spaces available for people who want to shop for a short while up to one hour). Very easy provided you can find one??
They are usually occupied by selfish drivers who think that a time restriction does not mean them and because they drive their BMW, 4 x 4 or Merc with a private plate it¿s ok.
Bring it on, let¿s see more and more tickets issued.
If you are a law abiding motorist you will have absolutely nothing to fear will you?? It¿s usually the ones who don¿t give a damn who do the most winging isn¿t it??
Just like the speed camera vans, how can anyone moan if they get caught, the answer is stick to the limit and you have nothing to fear, never mind this crap about generating easy money. If it wasn¿t for stupid motorists they would generate nothing.
How many shop keepers abuse the system by parking ALL day in a one hour restriction, the answer, too many.
Give them tickets every day until they learn that the parking laws apply to them too.”
