A MULTI-million pound scheme that could create 5,000 new jobs on the South Humber Bank has moved closer to becoming a reality.

The Yorkshire Forward development agency has committed up to £3.76-million to fund drainage improvements on the Killingholme Marshes area of the South Humber Gateway project.

And in a double boost for the proposed development, plans to transform the A160 have been rubber-stamped at regional level.

The South Humber Gateway aims to develop land from the Humber Bridge towards Immingham.

The draining of the marshes will be key to development as part of the project.

North Lincolnshire Council leader, Cllr Mark Kirk, said: "This is the news we have been waiting many years to hear.

"It is a massive boost for jobs and investment.

"It will provide the funding for the drainage of the whole of Killingholme marshes.

"Without this scheme, we simply cannot approve planning applications. That will now change.

"It will send out a very positive signal to potential inward investors.

"Once complete, it will open up hundreds of hectares of prime land for development."
