£30-million deal to deliver new jobs
SCORES of new jobs will be created thanks to a £30-million investment by DHL, the new distributor for convenience giant Nisa-Today's.
The cash boost will bankroll new facilities and vehicles, including a massive 65,000 sq ft temperature-controlled environment at Nisa-Today's logistics hub at Normanby Enterprise Park.
The move will allow the mega facility to handle chilled products en-masse for the first time – a fast-moving operation that requires an even larger labour pool.
Nisa-Today's chief executive, Neil Turton, said it underlines the company's commitment to Scunthorpe, while also improving the green credentials of the £1.3-billion turnover member-owned organisation.
"Scunthorpe is increasing in importance as the centre of our operations," he said.
He could not confirm exactly how many jobs the investment would create when DHL takes over distribution next year.
But he added: "When the new warehouse was opened in 2005 we employed 600, now it is at 850 and this development will grow us even further.
"We have got a very good opportunity to grow on the site, and it is a great time for members too.
"When we accomplish all of this we should be able to reduce prices, and we genuinely believe we will."
The development will effectively see the large cold store built within the company's 625,000 sq ft logistics centre.
It will allow the company to store more orders for longer for its growing list of 5,000 stores and 267 wholesale depots.
"We will look to start the build shortly after March next year, and it should be operational prior to Christmas," Mr Turton said.
