£20k of public money is being set aside so people across North Lincolnshire can enjoy 'friendship' lunches with their neighbours, the Scunthorpe MP has revealed.

Nic Dakin Tweeted: "North Lincolnshire Council has dedicated £20,000.00 from the Community Grant to fund Big Lunches."

On his Facebook page the MP adds: "The Big Lunch is a very simple idea from the Eden Project. The aim is to get as many people as possible across the whole of the UK to have lunch with their neighbours once a year in a simple act of community, friendship and fun.

"Since starting in 2009, thousands of Big Lunches have taken place in all types of community across the UK.

"Last year The Big Lunch fell on the same weekend as The Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations on Sunday 3rd June and The Big Jubilee Lunch was part of the main Diamond Jubilee programme of events announced by Buckingham Palace.

"Research shows that an astonishing eight and a half million people took part in events across the UK."

Councillor John Briggs (Axholme), Cabinet Member for Asset Management, Culture and Housing at North Lincolnshire Council, said today: "We are supporting The Big Lunch initiative that is taking place on Sunday 2 June by contributing £20,000 from the Community Fund budget.

"It is a wonderful opportunity to inspire local communities and bring them together. It offers communities the chance to engage with their local neighbourhoods, which they may usually not get the chance to do.

"Community participation and involvement will help make North Lincolnshire a better place to live and work.

"We welcome applications from community groups, residents and associations to take part in The Big Lunch."

“It's a fool's errand to try and get neighbours to socialise together. A variety of people with differing outlooks and priorities living in as close proximity as we do (and increasingly more so) will inevitably lead to conflict and dispute. Those who share similar outlooks will talk to each other anyway, and those who have different outlooks will be unlikely to want to have anything to do with their neighbours and will be consequently unlikely to participate in such a scheme. £20k is a drop in the ocean for projects like this, and it would be possible to come up with as many different ideas as to how better to spend the money as there are residents in North Lincolnshire. Pot holes...etc.....etc......etc.

This seems to me to be someone's pet project, perhaps agreed in return for support for a colleagues pet project. Might this be a touch too cynical of me?”

“When we wanted to have street parties all the neighbours clubbed together and supplied the food ect, that is what being neighbourly is all about, not spending tax payers money.”

“The next time Dakin minces into a food bank pretending to be a Socialist (Socialite in his case) he should be reminded of the £20k that's been wasted on silly hats and prawn rings.

    ****ing disgusting!”

“Do they wear leather jackets and tinted glasses in the winter?

I'd rather have £20k to build a nice high wall between me and my neighbour.”

“Who ever said " I don't believe it ." Should be asked about this essential use of funds from the public purse . Why don't NLC ask the private sector to fund this ?”
