Up to 25 jobs are set to be created as a national retailer moves in to the former Brown and Co auction house in the town's Market Place.

Home convenience store Boyes will open in the currently empty unit by October.

It will be the company's 43rd store, but the first in North Lincolnshire.

The company has built up a reputation for selling a wide range of goods at low prices, with items for the home and the family.

Andrew Boyes, chairman and joint managing director, said it would bring something different to the town's current shopping experience.

"We have signed the lease and will move in to the former auction house in Brigg," he said.

"Building work started on Monday, but not a lot of work will need to be done to change it from the use of an auction house to a retail store.

"We think this is a great property.

"We have looked at other sites in the past as this was always a location we looked to move in to."

The family-run business was set up in 1881 in Scarborough.

"We are looking forward to offer something different to the people of Brigg," he said.

"We are a family-style department store and sell a wide range of household hardware and clothing for all age groups, with over 30,000 products."

The site has been empty since October 2011, when the auction house closed its doors.

The new store will be a further boost to trade in the town, with few empty units available.

Paul Keane, owner of Grandad's Shed and member of the Brigg Town Business Partnership, said he hoped the new store would provide a boost to all retailers.

"It is fantastic news," he said. "Obviously filling an empty unit is great. There is not many of them in Brigg now.

"It is a diverse store that sells a lot of ranges, so it should be a benefit to the shoppers.

"It is good news that these types of businesses are coming to Brigg.

"It is a bit of a shame that it is a big company and not an independent store, but hopefully it will bring more shoppers to Brigg that will benefit the whole town."

The Brigg Town Business Partnership's Amazing Brigg Week began on Saturday, August 25 and will finish on Saturday, September 1.

Businesses signed up to the scheme will be offering customers a range of discounts throughout their stores.
