40 new jobs as GO Outdoors moves to ex-Matalan site in Scunthorpe
MORE than 40 jobs will be created when an outdoor activities retailer moves into a former Matalan store in Scunthorpe.
GO Outdoors, one of the UK's largest outdoor retailers, will move into the empty store on Dudley Road and begin trading in May in a £1.5m development.

Opening soon: Rebecca Davey, manager of the new GO Outdoors store
The unit was left vacant by Matalan when the business moved to Skippingdale Retail Park, in Scunthorpe, in October 2011.
The empty unit was used as a clearance store by Matalan from December 2011 to January this year.

Its future had been undecided until now, although the Telegraph reported last year that GO Outdoors was considering moving to the site.
Rebecca Davey, GO Outdoors manager for the new Scunthorpe store, said: "North Lincolnshire and the Humber region is an important area for GO Outdoors.
"It's a wonderful region for camping, hiking, cycling and stunning outdoor areas like the Lincolnshire Wolds.
"We're looking forward to Scunthorpe becoming a key store in our UK portfolio."
A hand-made timber path will mark the entrance to the store, which will also boast a family-friendly six metre high indoor climbing wall for customers to experience indoor rock climbing.
There will be a range of different walking surfaces throughout the store, for customers to test out different types of footwear.
The 29,000 square foot store will also have more than 40 tents pitched and on display on a tent field.
The store will employ more than 40 people and offer more than 20,000 outdoor product lines.
Nic Dakin, Labour MP for Scunthorpe, said: "It is very positive a business like this is wanting to invest and bring jobs to Scunthorpe. It can only be a good thing for the area.
"The area is fantastic for outdoor activities and it is good that this has been recognised by a business."

“Great just what Scunthorpe needs with this government taking benefits from the unfortunate unemployed. At least they will be able to buy sleeping bags when their homeless. Yes I hear you say there's plenty of a job for them but they just like staying in bed. Yes right, if you are saying that well I bet you have a good standard of living like I have, but I just feel compassion for those people who are been left behind! Communism is the answer.”

I'm sorry but you are completely wrong. The only vested interest that I have is a personal one in that I won't have to travel to York, Lincoln etc. to buy good quality hiking gear. Regarding the negative arrows I never use them, green or red, because, as I have stated recently, they are far too easy to manipulate and I think they are best ignored.
I fear that you may be correct in that the store won't survive more than a year, but let's try and be positive about new stores that want to open in Scunthorpe or it will become a ghost town.”

"I really hope GO Outdoors can succeed in Scunthorpe as it would be nice to have a quality outdoor retailer in this area. It shouldn't be compared with Matalan or the Range as it sells more specialist equipment and its prices are generally competitive with internet outlets, although you do need to buy a £5 annual discount card for many of the offers.
It's certainly a brave decision to open here as its isolated location does not lend itself to passing trade from other retail outlets and it will rely on those who go to purchase specific items. Only time will tell if there is sufficient demand in this area for it to succeed."

From your use of the red arrows and from your corporate statement, one could be forgiven for believing that you have a vested interest. I mean, I said I'd give them a year, to which you hit the negative arrows and then in your bold statement you say that "It's certainly a brave decision to open here" as if to convince us that Go Outdoors has the interests of Scunthorpe at heart….”

“Typical useless statement from a politician trying to keep his name in the news, as always”

“This store is pricey. Think I'll be heading to Matalan for my clothing, & The Range for camping gear. Mind you, I might need Skis from here if the ST's weather forecasts are correct ;o)”

“I'll give them a year and then it'll become a Clearance Store, as the last time I checked, Scunthorpe isn't exactly a town full of budding Chris Bonningtons!!”

“I think the ST was issuing snow warnings thinking a future advertiser would benefit from some custom. Only a matter of time before Amy or David hit on the Met Office website to announce that major blizzards are due at 18:00 hrs today (as they were yesterday, Thursday etc...) so get down to Go Outdoors and buy a woolly hat.”
