4pm UPDATE: Man falls through hole in pavement after 'ground collapses' in Portman Road, Scunthorpe

A man fell through a hole in the pavement after the ground beneath him apparently collapsed yesterday (Thursday, February 14).

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service was called out just before 3pm to Portman Road in Scunthorpe.

Fire crews helped rescue the man and he was transported to hospital by ambulance.

The incident was left with Humberside Police.

Update 11am today: A spokeswoman for Humberside Police said they received a call from the ambulance service just before 3pm, reporting a man having fallen down a hole.

She said: "The 64-year-old man was removed from the hole by Humberside Fire and Rescue Service and was taken to hospital with chest and shoulder pains.

"It appears the pavement had given way and left a hole approximately 4ft deep.

"The matter was left with North Lincolnshire Council to deal with."

Update 2pm: A North Lincolnshire Council spokesman said: "We are aware of a hole developing outside a resident's property on Portman Road. It is believed an underlying water issue has caused the footpath to give way in one location. This issue had been reported to Severn Trent prior to Christmas and the area had been signposted. Severn Trent are now investigating."

Update 4pm: A spokeswoman for Severn Trent said: "We only had it reported to us yesterday. We went to investigate and make the area safe. We suspect there is damage to the sewer but until we dig down there we won’t know.

"We have put another job to go back out and carry out some excavation work to look at the issue and carry out any necessary repairs.

"We know it might be an inconvenience for some local residents getting in and out of their properties but we are working as quickly as we can to investigate it.”
