SOUTHAMPTON are today on the verge of making Nigel Adkins their new manager, according to reports on the south coast.

The city's Daily Echo newspaper say the Iron boss is thought to be in

negotiations with the club this afternoon while the Saints draw up

contracts and settle on a compensation figure.

Iron chairman Steve Wharton has so far been unavailable for comment on the issue.

But it seems certain now that Adkins will be offered the chance to take

charge at St Mary's - with the big decision then coming down to the

45-year-old.

Former Hull City chief Phil Brown this morning confirmed he had met

Saints chairman Nicola Cortese for talks on Monday and was very

interested in the job.

But bookmakers suspended betting on Adkins taking over last night

following some big money bets and the United manager now appears to be

the pick of the Southampton board too.

“I thought Nige would have learnt from Brian Laws. Here he could basically relegate us to mid division 2 before Wharton would contemplate sacking him, so in effect he has the proverbial job for life. Laws thought he could do better with the pigs, jumped ship & got sacked.... Southampton have not got the best track record with Managers, and rumours are if the new Southampton manager does not get promoted this season he will be down the job centre sharpish. Is it worth the risk..... and to a team in a lower division too????”

“If,as is expected, Adkins does leave, who will his replacement be?? My favourite would be Ian Barroclough with Graham Taylor working alongside him. Failing that, Sammy McIlroy with Mark Lillis. They are a proven management team that would do well here

    UP THE IRON”

“Talk about 'Jumping the Gun', why not wait until the job is actually NA's then moan like 'Billy Ho', Mr Adkins has had to work with limited resources, difficult wage budget, selling players on for massive profit and yet still keep SUFC in the Championship!!! The guy should have been given the freedom of the town years ago. He has done fantastically well, if he moves to Southampton then so be it. At least some of us will thank him for the service he has given to the club and the outstanding contribution he has made.

One Nigel Adkins, there's only one Nigel Adkins, woaaaan Nigel Adkins.

You don't know what you have missed till it's gone Mr Wharton............

    U.T.I.

“I can't wait to hear NA'S first ground breaking interview with the Southampton press.
' I've come to a great club bla bla bla with a great bunch of honest players bla bla bla who work hard for each other bla bla bla '
Hardly Mr Charisma is he ....
Mark my words he...he will fail there and be back to try and take US back into the championship nest season.
He's excellent with limited resources but when the purse strings open he'll be like a rabbit in the headlights .
It's like me ... I'm ace at dieting until you give me the key to the fridge ;-)”

“Yes - that six month rolling contract we have tied Adkins down to is exactly the type of small minded thinking that we are used to....

Adkins should be tied to United for life, playing a role in re-designing the ground and the training facilities as well as over seeing a youth academy, Wenger-stylee...instead he is on peanuts, with no budget at a club where ambition is left at the door....bu at least we exist eh, just imagine if we didnt!

    Up the Iron!”

“Our inability to keep Sparrow, Hayes, Macaan or Williams (all left because of poor wages - nothing else) far outweighs the loss of Gary Hooper.

The biggest MYTH at SUFC is that all this cash is in savings for a 'rainy day'...it's gone - we've made more dough than a Danish bakery via Adkins and he still wasn't allowed to sign anyone beyond Div 1 reserves.

At least we 'exist' though eh 'happy clappers'...just imagine if we were in the same state as the other 91 clubs are...then we'd exist with a bit of debt...BLIMEY!

    Up the Iron!”

Jannersaint - certainly you can sing a song for us will that be against Yeovil, if so I'll try and stay awake that long into the Football League Show”

“Get real people. After the summer exodus NA was just waiting for the opportunity. If you saw the picture of Adkins when Sparrow left you would have known then. The departures of Hayes and Sparrow were the proverbial straw.

An internal appointment will follow. We can't afford a real manager. Or rather, Wharton won't pay.”
