JANNEY'S Allstars will attempt to become the first Scunthorpe-area team to win the Humber Cup since the mid-1980s this season.

The Fallen Hero Scunthorpe Scunthorpe Sunday Football League Division One team beat Grimsby side Birds Eye Athletic 2-0 in the south bank final played in driving rain in Cleethorpes.

Goals in either half from John Barnard and captain Martin Mackenzie saw off their hosts to seal a place in the final.

Fender Talbot came close to winning the Humber Cup last season, but were eventually defeated on penalties.

Janney's will face an as-yet unknown side from the Hull and East Riding final at Barton Town's Euronics Ground on Thursday, September 23 (7.30pm kick-off).

A Scunthorpe team have not won the competition since Desert Rat did back in 1983.

But Janney's secretary Sarah Janney has high hopes that her team will be able to claim the title of being the best Sunday league side in Humberside.

"These records are there to be broken!" Sarah said hopefully.

"We broke a record last year when we became the first team to go up through every division in the Scunthorpe League from bottom to top since Kypros back in the 1980s.

"It was absolutely throwing it down for the game in Cleethorpes and they (Birds Eye) had two goals disallowed for offside so they were a good team and it was a very good game to watch.

"Our lads play very passionately so there's no reason why we cannot win in the final.

"I hope we win, we might just do it this time.

"We don't know who we'll play yet, but anything's possible!"
