SCORES of cookery students will have to complete their studies elsewhere after North Lindsey College withdrew its catering course.

The college confirmed it had chosen to scrap the course after a review showed local employers preferred to train employees in-house - thus reducing the demand for a college-based course.

As a result, it is understood that around 50 students from the Kingsway Campus will now have to travel to Doncaster or Grimsby to complete the second half of their course.

Professor Roger Bennett, principal of North Lindsey College said: "The decision was taken to withdraw our hospitality provision following a review of the area and the needs of employers within the hospitality industry.

"As part of the review it was uncovered that many employers are now preferring to train their employees in-house to meet the individual requirements of their business, reducing the demand for hospitality courses offered through colleges.

"Our highly qualified and experienced guidance team have been involved throughout the process and have been available for all learners to access providing them with clear guidance on the alternative study routes available to them and the processes for applying to continue their hospitality training at either Doncaster or Grimsby."

“As a parent of one of the students on this course, I would like to know where th "in house" training is given by local employers! When my son left school last year he sent cvs and letters to all our local hotels and restaurants expressing an interest in employment in the kitchens and stating he wanted to pursue a career in this business. He didn't get one reply let alone an interest in anyone wanting to train him to their requirements. If this is why the course has been cancelled then surely this would have been a hotels ideal opportunity to employ some fresh talent.”

“I read with absolute disgust and great sadness the news that there will no longer be full time hospitality (it¿s not just ¿catering¿) at North Lindsey College. I enjoyed some memorable times undertaking a hospitality course at the College and had an excellent learning experience provided by passionate, dedicated, and above all industrially up-to-date tutors. The teaching was totally related to industry whether it was food production, customer service, human resources or the dreaded costing!
I was most surprised to read that the ¿excuse¿ for closing the hospitality section was due to ¿employer views¿ ¿ from my experience local employers totally supported full time hospitality provision and regularly employed students on a casual or part-time basis. Timetables were such that there were many opportunities for learners to supplement industrial experience whilst also studying full time at College. In fact many employers could not sustain ¿in-house¿ training and this was often not very structured and did not compare to what the College facilities could offer (at least until the present Principal Mr Bennett took up post!). In addition to this I was very lucky to participate in working with my tutors abroad at such high quality hospitality venues such as York racecourse and the Paris International Air Show catering for a range of diverse and varied international customers.
What surprises me the most, however, is the College still has 14-16 hospitality provision which, presumably provides yr 10/11 pupils an introduction to hospitality and catering with a view to progress on to post 16 education? This is unremarkable given the capital spent on developing the ¿14-16 Skills centre¿. Additionally at the other end of the spectrum in the Colleges higher education department there is the recently established, and I believe successful, HND Tourism and Hospitality programme which has previously provided students with an opportunity to continue education in the local area without having the expense of going to university.
With regard to comments relating to the closure of the excellent catering facilities a few years ago ¿ I personally found this unbelievable and am sure this was to facilitate a suitable location for the present senior management suite!
In my opinion the whole issue is a travesty and comes down to poor leadership and management of what was once one of the best hospitality departments in the Yorkshire and Humber region ¿ it is bitterly disappointing and bluntly embarrassing that North Lindsey no longer offers this provision to the young people of North Lincolnshire. To add to all this, with the government initiatives encompassing the 14-19 reform and diplomas, which are all about collaborative working and providing learners with broad, transferable and workplace skills, it is pure single-minded madness!!!!!

“employers do train their staff with nvq's but some of them aren't worth the paper they are written on, a good collage course with practical cooking will beat these any day, i spent 2 great years at north lindsey and wouldn't be where i am now, yes most pubs don't need chef's for the type of menu's they produce, times change and people are looking at more cost effective ways of producing food to sell which we all know using fresh core ingrediants will beat any pre cooked microwave pouched meal any day”
