Anxious wait over Barton by-pass study
AN ANXIOUS wait continues for residents and councilors
looking into plans for a by-pass for Barton.
-

Results of a study into the road project will be back with
the council at the end of November.
But until the research highlights the best possible
solutions plans are on hold.
The death of 74-year-old Dorothy Murphy, who was killed in a
collision with a heavy goods vehicle while on a pedestrian
crossing last month, sparked calls for the construction of a
town by-pass.
As previously reported in the Scunthorpe Telegraph, Barton
Town Councilors voted in favour of analysing old plans,
constructed in the early 1990s, at this month's council
meeting.
Ms Shirley Richards, town clerk, explained the process was a
slow one.
"It is taking a while to receive them as they were in the
hands of Humberside County Council before the change of
authority," she said.
The council said since the project would have such a high
cost it would be looked at very carefully before a decision was
made.
Traders have had mixed views. Despite welcoming the new road
for lorries and HGV vehicles they are concerned the diversion
of through-flow traffic could hit town trade.

“No news is...well, no news! Surely it would be best to wait and get it right than rush, waste taxpayers money and get it wrong?”

“Does a slight loss in trade in the town really matter all that much considering people's lives are going to be saved?”
