MORALE-boosting treats have been organised by the Army for the families of North Lincolnshire soldiers who are serving in Afghanistan.

Currently the Scunthorpe-based 147 Field Company of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) has its highest-ever detachment of nine soldiers on duty in the war zone.

Among them is Corporal Glenn (correct) Fearn, 46, from Barrow-Upon- Humber, who is due to return home next month.

He left behind his wife Serena, their three children Kyle,15, Brandon, 12, and Carl, seven, and his dad Charley and step-mum Val.

Captain Peter Graves, the administration officer for 147 Company, said: "The families of our nine solders serving in Afghanistan are as much a part of the Army as they are.

"It is my duty and a privilege to help support the families whilst their husband, son or daughter is away serving their country."

Previously Captain Graves had organised a luncheon in Scunthorpe for 22 family members of the nine soldiers and arranged for personalised greetings to be filmed and sent to Afghanistan.

But he decided to roll out the red carpet for the Fearns.

The six-strong family were chauffeur-driven from North Lincolnshire to York for their VIP day out.

“These targets are on foreign soil, occupying land that isn't theirs. Our brothers will fight to defend the land. The poppy fields will yield the fruits to sustain the fight.”
