Addition of Miller to Iron squad can bring the best out of others

FAR from feeling threatened by the arrival of another striker at Glanford Park, Jonathan Forte insists the new addition will only help him improve.

Lee Miller joined the Scunthorpe United squad on loan from Middlesbrough on Friday, with manager Ian Baraclough hoping he can help solve the Iron's goal-scoring woes.

With only 26 goals to their credit so far this term, Baraclough's men have one of the worst records in the Championship, a statistic which has left them struggling in the relegation zone.

Forte accepts it is an area he has let the team down in.

But, despite his place now in doubt, he remains confident his tally of four for the season will increase as he looks to help United fight for survival.

"If someone's on your toes looking for your position, then you're going to play better," said the 24-year-old.

"It's good for the team when they bring in more players and better for the club.

"We needed fresh people coming in and it gives us all a boost. There's more competition now.

"Being a footballer, there is a lot of pressure. You've just got to deal with it.

"If I'm in a position to score goals then I should be doing it.

"At the moment it hasn't gone right for me, but we're halfway through the season so hopefully it will pick up.

"Obviously not scoring does affect me but it's one of those things.

"You've just got to pick yourself up and when you get a chance again, put it away.

"I'm confident I can do it, I've just not got to think about it and put it in the net really.

"If you keep thinking about it, then it plays on your mind a lot, so you just try to block it out and play your normal game."

The Iron front man has come in for some criticism for failing to do just that.

Forte, who accepts he is not a natural goalscorer, believes some of the blame heaped on his shoulders may be unfair, given his natural role is as a winger.

However, he is prepared to take any bad reviews in his stride.

"You always get criticised. I'm my own critic as well," said the former Sheffield United man.

"It does affect your confidence but if you can't deal with it, then you're in the wrong profession.

"I started out as a winger, so that's where I'm used to playing.

"But since I came here, they see me as a striker.

"I enjoy playing there and it's good, but hopefully I can score more goals. That would be good for the team and for me.

"My play is more down the channel and putting balls on for people.

"But if you get in a position, you've got to put the ball away.

"I think every striker practices their finishing. Hopefully it's going to pick up.

"Obviously you set your own personal goals but I don't want to say what they are."

“Well done Chris, can you not read? Have you ever seen him play?
It is obvious he's a wide man, not a striker! Whenever he plays wide he has great games, leaves defenders for dead and supplys great crosses.
Hopefully now we have real strikers, who play that position by trade, we can now get Forte out on the wing causing trouble for back lines.”

“Get it right Jonno, you've been with us for three seasons and are still to reach double figures of goals scored. We are not signings strikers to keep you on your toes, they are to replace you because you haven't been good enough. Can you honestly say you've been fluffing sitters for two years because there isn't enough competition in reserve to keep you competitive, so you become complacent?”
