"Everyone who meets him speaks of his strength, courage and determination," said Adele.
Adele and Rebecca want to do their part to help raise money for his treatment, which is experimental and therefore costly.
"We wanted to do something fun that would capture people's imagination and raise money for his treatment," Adele said.
Adele, author of a book called Denial On Vampire Legends, contacted Rebecca after reading an article about the publication of Rebecca's book, Bleed Black.
That book follows four teenagers in Northumberland through their final summer before leaving for university.
The authors' battle features a series of challenges. People are invited to vote on the challenges on the Facebook page – at www.facebook.com/Battle OfTheBooksForLex – to decide which author wins each round.
Tasks include the weirdest place for a book signing and the most unusual book retailer.
Adjudicator Charlotte Oatway and her father Steve agreed to get involved as soon as they heard about the battle.
Not only did Steve photograph the cover for Adele's book, he is also involved with Alexander and his family, recording the special things that have been arranged for him.
Charlotte will be adjudicating the competitions and putting updates on social media sites.
Rebecca said: "We'll be out in Doncaster in fancy dress one week and doing a book signing in Epworth the next."
The books will be for sale at several unusual retailers, from a butcher's to a solicitor's.
Details of each unexpected location will be on the Facebook page, along with photos for the audience to vote on the most unusual.
The books can also be purchased from Amazon, or can be ordered directly from the Facebook page.
The battle has had support from across the globe, with companies and individuals buying the books and pledging support.
