Avoid being penalised
finance: Small businesses in Hull are being urged to make sure the taxman is not penalising them unfairly.
Darren Tomlinson, who runs Tax Assist Accountants in Hull, said: "We always advise local business owners and the self-employed to put the end of October firmly in their diary for filing their self- assessment tax returns on paper, or the end of the following January if filing online.
"This year the warning was even starker, with HMRC for the first time adding daily fines to the initial £100 fixed penalty if the forms were still not submitted.
"That means some 500,000 people across the UK are receiving penalties of at least £1,200 this month."
