Iron's cup exit was like a 'training game' for Everton says Baraclough
BOSS Ian Baraclough accused his side of being 'awe-struck' and lacking passion as their hopes of beating top-flight opposition for the first time in more than 40 years evaporated at Glanford Park.
It was hoped an FA Cup test against Everton would provide the Iron with a welcome respite from Championship combat, where they find themselves currently treading water in a relegation battle.

CONGRATS: Iron boss Ian Baraclough embraces Jermaine Beckford at the end of Saturday's game, having seen the former United loanee impress against his old club. Picture: Carl Gac.
But aside from a 10 minute spell after half-time, when Michael Collins scored to cut the Blues' lead down to 2-1, the problems that have become a staple reason behind the club's slide down the table were there for all to see.
"At the beginning of the second half we showed the sort of passion we'd talked about before the game," said a downbeat Baraclough.
"That showed what we can do, but it needed to be there from the beginning.
"I saw Everton in midweek against Tottenham. They are high tempo and won't feel sorry for you.
"You've got to get about them and when we did, we showed we can create something.
"Yes we scored a great goal, but it's not good enough to only have a 20 minute spell like that.
"I said to the players after the game, 'did you feel you weren't good enough to be on the same pitch?' It was almost a training game for them, we were just making up the opposition.
"I think the lads were awe-struck a little bit or showed them too much respect and allowed them too much space to play.
"When Everton smell blood, they go for it."
Baraclough must now lift his side from another poor performance in front of their own fans as they prepare to travel to high-flying Leeds United on Saturday.
Nobody likes getting beat, but it's easier to stomach when you put up a fight – something which was sadly lacking against the Blues.
Understandably upbeat about his side's survival chances, the Iron manager says his side must use the quality of Everton's play as a moniker for what can be achieved with a strong work ethic as they prepare for their visit to Elland Road.
"We can draw a line under it," he said of the 5-1 loss. "We've got half the season to go.
"We're three points off the total we had last season at this stage when we amassed an amount of points that was enough to keep us up. There's no reason why we can't do that again.
"We'll get a couple of bodies in to help us out to make a push and get ourselves out of the bottom three.
"We've seen what it takes to compete with the best and the amount of work that has to be put in to do that. That's a level we've got to attain."

“Spend? Spend? Spend?
Nope - the towns club should be the focal point of all interest in the region .... this means that it is open 365/24/7 with a gym, astro turf pitches, restaurant the lot - summer should be a list of concerts and exciting friendlies. The club should be the towns benefactor when it comes to charities and everything about the ground should be geared towards QUALITY - be it the pies or the Frois Gras.
FIRST IS FIRST AND SECOND IS NOWHERE - we should have the best youth set ups in the area, be cntantly striving to add to the stadium - it should have a train platform, a park and ride and ivy all over that grey cladding. The atmosphere shoul be worked on, not mithered and everything from the kit to the press should be worked on.
At the start of every season our goal should be to sell out every game - starting with the away end by pushing away tickets to away fans as hard as we should be pushing home tickets to home fans - the whole set up is backward at SUFC and that is a shame..
Spend? Spend? Spend? Nope - our role model should be based on youth proteges and stadium design inovation...just like it used to be.
Anyone who thinks there is a proper Iron fan out there who expcts us to blow money we dont have simply does not understand thi subject and would be better advied to understand the supporters mindset before commenting on it.
Up the Iron!”

“Oscar - good points, but you're forgetting TV money that comes in to the club due to being in the NPC, that would mean we'd need less support/lower ticket prices to cover the wages. Also, I have never once called for Wharton to leave the club (for a start, there is nobody to take his place so anyone wishing for him to leave is foolish) or spend his own money, but I do want to see him use some of his business acumen to increase the support base, increase revenue streams (why did it take so long to build an away bar? why did we allow all manner of businesses to spring up around GP to make money from OUR customers?) and increase sponsorship (if you believe what is written on certain supporter message boards, getting hold of someone at the club when you wish to do something as simple as advertise at the side of the pitch can be a thankless task) - we are in one of the most watched leagues in the world, after all. If it takes the employment of a Marketing Manager or some such, then so be it - the money would be well spent and would be a sign of intent off the pitch.”

“Good to see some well researched thoughtful discussion on here for a change.
Oscar you make very valid points.
1500 were the accounts your copy or are they available on line? I'd love to see them as well.
As for new Directors its always seemed to me the area has not got the money or the interest to find a seriously wealthy benefactor.
After all would you give mi££ions of your childrens inheritance to support SUFC?
The point about matching up with Doncaster is an error though.
The wider Metrpolitan borough of Doncaster is one of the largest in the country 286,000 so even if you add Brigg Winterton etc. their catchment is at least 3x that of SUFC but their crowds aren't ! We average 5800 they only get 10400.”

“The last few weeks the usual suspects have been telling us what is wrong with the club ( most of it just stating the bleeding obvious) and how they with their magnificient and superior wisdom know how to correct it, some of which I agree with but financially they have no idea.
Carl, P.doff, 1500 etc your hearts are in the right place and you are obviously devoted fans but your spend, spend spend policy would lead only to disaster.
I may be a happy clapper but thats better than a member of 'Administration United'”

“You do realise that the board actually think they are the reason that we have done well, dont you? It's got nowt to do with Adkins or Hooper or Sharp - its all down to the boards knowledge of football and experience in business - this is why they dont lower themelves to respond to any press...the REALITY is that, on their alienated Planet, they are MASTERS OF THEIR OWN UNIVERSE....you will find the board at United laughing at supporters questioning their ability.
I read the accounts on Sunday night and it even includes a feature on Gartons 'Trust' and Wagstaffes 'Youth' (these types actually have an input into footballing matters whilst never putting a penny into the club)....these people actually BELIEVE that they are superior in knowledge and even a pityful couple of grands worth of shares cant change that - it's vanity and even as we drop back down the leagues they cannot think any other way.
As for our wage bill - well, after 3 years out of 4 at NPC level we SHOULD be nearer £10 million, we SHOULD be averaging 8,000 a week gates and we SHOULD have built the capacity back up to the 11,000 GP was when first constructed.....you will never see this board seeking investment, be it private or public (council) becuse, 'in their minds' no one could do better than them, no one would have their vision or ability and no one would generate more interest in SUFC...that is the true reason that we play in a BSP ground, with rubbish support and a manager working with peanuts because the boards VANITY will not allow anything to undermine their efforts. None of the board even live in Scunny, none are self made - and all of them have (in one shape or another) had their FAT FINGERS in the club for years....much smaler clubs than United have larger boards with input and yet there is this attitude of 'who else is there'...the answer is 'no one' because years of this set of clowns have put off any potential investors.
Up the Iron!”

“The way to fund it is get more ambitious people involved with the board the current bunch contribute naff all.The money for being in this leauge should be a big enough carrot to show minimal acceptable levels of ambition. As a club we should be on a par with Donny who do want to succeed. Also we cannot expect reasonable attendances when the team lacks fight and passion.Even in the 70,s in front of 1100 gates at least the effort was there.Anyway the transfer window is nearly half over ,we play LUFC next ,were are the new signings urgently required."UP THE IRON"!!!”

“According to George Kerr at weekend our wage bill is £5 million pa, thats £96,000 a week.
Some people (quite rightly) want to bring in better players, who will want better wages and I agree that the present bill could be reduced by getting rid of some of the dross.
However it is argued that better players will increase the gate and therefore revenue.
I accept that gate money is'nt the only revenue but if we play 23 league and 2 cup games at home, a year. then we need to make about £200,000 per game. If were able to attract a full house (9,000) every week ( as opposed to the currenht 5,000) we would have to charge an average of about £22 per person and regardless of how good or poor the team is we have/will never attract that sort attendance.
Furthermore bringing in these better players is no guarantee of survival and we could be playing league one next year and paying Championship wages.
I would therefore like to ask the lads who want Wharton out, how they would like the new bloke to finance the club?
Would they accept an increase in ticket prices, or maybe risk bankrupcy in the hope the club can find stability in the Championship.
How would you fund the team?”

“Saturday exposed SUFC for what we are - naked and full frontal.
Anyone see the Stevenage game on TV? Decent atmosphere, nice little ground unrecogniseable from th last Newcastle game and a decent side full of fight...United couldnt fight their way out of a paper bag at the moment - this is the worst Iron team in living memory...Ive been going since 1981 and in that period Forte/Dagnall are by far the worst partnership.
Josh Wright and O'Connor are vastly over-rated and Collins is like the invisible man - just wont get involved.
Well done Wharton, you had a silk purse via Adkins and turned it into a pugs ear with your constant cut backs and inability to turn a coin - where is the new Iron Bar, the new stand? The atmosphere? This is by far the most depressing period I can recall.
PS if the players cant get above the tempo of a training game they should dock their wages and donate it to Dylans fund.
Up the Iron!”

“This is far from the first time this season. So what's going to be done about it? Something, or nothing?”
