FORMER Scunthorpe manager Ian Baraclough was back at football on Saturday – watching the man who might succeed him!

He was in the stands at managerless Port Vale watching them draw 0-0 with Alan Knill's Bury.

It's still less than a fortnight since Baraclough was axed by the Iron after just 24 weeks in charge at Glanford Park.

Since then, he has kept a low profile, releasing only a statement about his dismissal through the League Manager's Association.

But on Saturday he was sat alongside his former Mansfield team-mate Aidy Boothroyd, who was himself recently sacked at Coventry.

It fuelled speculation that one, or both, could be eyeing up the job at Port Vale following the dismissal there of Jim Gannon.

"I've tasted being a manager at Scunthorpe and feel like I've got a lot to offer as a young manager," Baraclough declared.

"I'll probably be interested in a lot of jobs which may come up over the coming months.

"Vale is a big club which is under-achieving being in League Two, so I would think it will be an attractive job for a lot of people.

"But I haven't sorted out my compensation package with Scunthorpe yet so I'm not sure I'm even in a position to apply for the job."

“Did anyone really expect us be anywhere other, than the bottom three after Whartons 'summer cull'?

Surely, the moment the fans turned on Baraclough, it became clear that the board would be next and as the 'buffer' Baraclough had to go? I understand IB's recrod was poor but six months? It's not like he wasnt here under Adkins for years so he obviously understood the limitations....I'd have prefered Baraclough to have been supported and then given a chance to go back up - I'm sure Knill is a steady choice (as are the rest) but it wont alter the fundimental problem that we are perennially skint, have no idea how to raise interet in the team and live off the same old excuses about the crowds etc.

It is now evident that the manager doesnt soley choose the players we bring in (as demonstrated by this weeks transfers) and that the sacking of IB was a knee jerk reaction...most clubs have a ready made replacement already tapped up but we act like we've no idea...have we even advertied the post? If anything we should have sacked Parkin and brought in Boothroyd or Lillis or suchlike.

Anyhows - it's done now, I simply cannot see Knill taking SUFC back up the the NPC..which is perhaps the idea - a steady/mid table Div 1 club?

    UP THE IRON!”

“Alan Knill pretty much nailed on to be the new manager..what's he achieved..nothing.The decision to replace Hooper with Forte would lead us to relegation whoever was in charge(including Nige),and i still think Barra should have been given chance to get us back to the championship..i no were not down yet...but can anybody believe Alan Knill will save us? UP THE IRON”

“I wish Ian all the very best - he was treated badly by United and was given only a few weeks to work with the players he brought into the club...Nelson, Duffy, Miller and Gardner look good players and had he had Murphy, Thompson and Byrne fit we would surely have been a few points better off.

Sacking a young manager, after six months, with absolutley no 'plan b' (leaving us in the NPC with no gaffer for weeks) is about as nieve as one could expect. The moment a few kids started signing songs, Wharton must have thought 'that'll be me next if dont act and sack Bara at 11pm'...utter nonsense - we may as well have backed Bara, even in the event of relegation (as we did with the supposedly BULLET PROOF Laws) and accepted that injuries and a lack of investment by the board were to blame for our shortcomings.

    Up the Iron!”
