Baraclough: United's work in January transfer window like 'spinning plates'

IAN Baraclough said Scunthorpe United’s work in the January transfer window is akin to ‘spinning plates’ as he continues attempts to strengthen his squad.

He concedes the Iron are not really an attractive prospect given their form and place in the Championship table – but is still hopeful of adding two or three new faces to a side badly in need of a spark on the back of Saturday’s FA Cup exit against Everton.

Bids remain on the table for several players – including Bristol Rovers striker Will Hoskins.

And a new name linked with Glanford Park over the course of the weekend has been Kilmarnock's Craig Bryson, whom the Press Association claim is a target for a host of clubs, including the Iron and their Championship rivals Watford and Swansea.

"There's been interest in Craig from a number of clubs outside Scotland but I won't be saying who they are," said the midfielder's agent Gerry Carlile.

"However, Craig is under contract at Rugby Park and until such time that a club agrees terms with Killie, then he will remain a Kilmarnock player and that's where he will concentrate all his energy and attention."

Capped by Scotland in November, Bryson is a box-to-box midfielder under contract at Rugby Park for another two years.

The fact though that SPL side Hearts had a £300,000 bid for the player rebuffed in the summer, with Killie thought to want around £500,000, means he is almost certainly out of Scunthorpe's price range - particularly as United need more than one new face during January.

Another certainty is that Baraclough cannot afford to wait around, with the desperation for different options heightening.

“It’s not easy to get people to move clubs in January,” said the United boss.

“We’re finding that out, but I’m aiming to get people in because we need two or three bodies.

“We’ve not been told an outright no on certain people, but I’m not going to hang around for them. If I don’t get an impression they’re going to want to come here I’ll move on.

“A performance like Saturday reinforces the need to strengthen all areas.

“We need fresh faces, not to necessarily replace anybody but to give the squad a boost and bring the best out of players.

“We’re not that far away. There’s facets of games where you think we have got a good enough squad, but they are not for long enough periods.”

“Its not true that no new fans are going to GP.
I took my son on Saturday for his first ever game.
He was left with the impression that if you are a home supporter , you are to sit (or stand) quietly (as if in a Library ) and only make the occasional noise if you team scores (then only for a couple of mins and then revert back to type).
On the other hand if you support Everton and are outnumbered you should sing the whole game through (in fact they were a bit loud for his very young ears). He did actually shout come on Scunthorpe but was left wondering if his Dad had played a joke on him as no one else was joining in!
He also thinks you should get up and go home half way through and he now thinks we lost a game the crowd were playing as we were the only ones left on our row after the 5th goal went in.

I'm sure you'll all find your own justification and say that your mums had told you to be home by 5 but the attitude from the fans was a disgrace.
As if we were still going to get a result at 4:1, what difference did it make that we conceded a fifth?
It just showed the team on the pitch a lack of respect and support which was completely unncessary. We never get a result against Premiership opposition. Yes we sometimes give them a better game but we always lose. We know htat before we head off to the game - so why insult the tteam by walking out?

And the same people are asking for better quality players to come and entertain them? To put their careers on the line ? To move their families to the area to share in our shopping experience? Why should they?

Bara has got this team winning games away from home. So they can play. Just maybe the team actually respond better to the away support, because its support, not just a crowd of church mice.

We have hardly ever been vocal at GP or the OSG but I know that when the fans have really put a shift in the team have responded. Some passion off the field has garnered passion on the field so come on show some support!

As for the display - A Wright's defending was fine but his distribution was lacking. It's no use hanging crosses up for the likes of Fellaini and Distan to intercept. If he has to cross get it low and hard and give the boys up front some sort of chance. Everton seemed to have worked this out so Wright was always left as the one with space for our out ball leaving him to have to pick a pass.
I thought Collins had a poor first half and seemed low on confidence so a big surprise when he smacked that ball in - well done!
Wooly hardly saw any of the ball, and has Nolan now gone into his shell having signed his contract? He hardly crossed the half way line when his strength has been going forward.

Better quality oposition of course but before Saha received the ball for the first goal I shouted he was in too much space, team as a whole has to put in far more effort to close quality players down. Then get the ball and keep it on the deck!”

“John - have some pride in your club man. The ET have a responsibility to hold the club to account. Holding institutions to account, believe it or not, is the role of the press (as much as a large section of the press seem to think they exist purely to tell us what Cheryl Cold wore to the shops). The ET are not currently doing that. They are also in the priveleged position of having access to the club, yet they refuse to pose any meaningful questions that the supporters wish to see asked, preferring to prostrate themselves and act as the club's mouthpiece. Of course the "journalists" have columns that need filling, but it is not beyond the wit of man to ask for something of substance to fill them, rather than "player X thinks Y about Z", which for some reason, seems to sate your ilk. Would anyone from the ET like to offer a defence? It seems you prefer to lurk in the background, moderating away and hoping the storm will blow over.”

“If you do not like what the ST prints why do you read it?

Journalists have to provide copy for every edition, and I imagine that the editor will want a story about The Iron for every edition. So, to get that, they speak to a player or part of the management team, get a few quotes and cobble together a story. Job done!

But, you do not have to read it!

In exactly the same way as when I see a post from Pdoff, I simply bypass it, you can bypass the ST.”

“In addition to Eddie, can I take this opportunity to ask the reporting team at the ST to approach Steve Wharton on behalf of us the fans and ask him about his recent comments about not wanting to attract more fans.

Could you ask him if he is equally blasé or crass about all things Scunthorpe United and does his jaw dropping attitude spread to his entire ambition about the club and it's future.

Could you also ask him to consider stepping aside and letting someone take the reigns who does have ambition and passion for the club.

Can you also ask him to stop the players, manager and him paying lip service about plans, capability and visions for the future when it is quite evident from one single comment that what he says should be taken with a pinch of salt. Please also bear in mind that he will blame the fans for any demise, he will blame the fans for staying away and he will blame the fans for staying away for not spending any correct level on monies to keep us in the NPC.”
