Barton upon Humber children are preparing to get to work on lighting up the town's Christmas Festival.

This October half-term local children will begin work on lanterns for the Christmas Lantern Parade, an increasingly popular part of the town's festive celebrations.

  1. Sessions will be held in the October half term by children's charity ST-ART to make the lanterns.

The lantern making sessions, organised by the children's art charity ST-ART, will be held at The Ropewalk throughout the half-term, and for one day only in both Goxhill and Scawby.

The sessions start on Monday, October 29, and run every day at The Ropewalk from 10am to 3pm until Friday, November 2.

Sessions will be held in Goxhill on Wednesday, October 31 and Scawby on Thursday, November 1.

Janine Knight, ST-ART's project co-ordinator, who organises the lantern making, says the sessions are suitable for all ages, and adults are especially welcome to help with the lantern making.

She said "We will be making both large-scale lanterns and lanterns small enough to be held by young people.

"This year the lanterns will have a circus theme so expect to see elephants, lions, circus dogs, jugglers and strong-men making their way through Barton's town centre on November 24."

Barton youngsters had their first chance to see the lanterns at the October Barton Farmers' Market - which is held on the second Saturday of every month.

Artist Helen Scrimshaw had prepared a monkey-like lantern which was unveiled on the Barton Tourism Partnership stall.

The lantern parade will set off from The Ropewalk at 5pm on Saturday, November 24, making its way through the town centre to the Christmas Festival.

All lanterns must remain at The Ropewalk until then, and can be taken home afterwards.

The cost of the workshops is £5 per day or £2 per half-day session.

Another half-term workshop being organised by ST-ART is jewellery making with Diane Higgins Lee which takes place on Thursday, November 1 between 10.30am and 3.30pm.

The day workshop costs £10 inclusive of materials and is suitable for young people aged between 13 and 18 years.
