Book Reviews by Nick Cole - The Racketeer and Forever Rumpole
THE RACKETEER – JOHN GRISHAM (Hodder and Stoughton £19.99). Celebrating 25 years since his first book was published, John Grisham is still ahead of the game. Lawyer Malcolm Bannister is wrongly jailed for 10 years as an innocent bystander in a money-laundering operation. Then a federal judge and his secretary are murdered in a lakeside cabin. Bannister claims to the FB1 he knows the name of the killer but in returns he wants his freedom, a new identity and a new life. As Grisham readers would expect The Racketeer is full of twists and turns and nothing is as straight forward as it appears. This is JG writing at the very top of his powers.
FOREVER RUMPOLE” – JOHN MORTIMER (Penguin £9 99). The best of Horace Rumpole is represented in this new selection of 14 stories, the first published in 1978 and the last in 2004.The book ends with a sample of the new Rumpole book Sir John was writing when he died four years ago. TV turned the evergreen barrister into a national treasure but in around 80 Rumpole stories fans get even closer to the character. How can we ever forget She Who Must Be Obeyed.
