Book reviews with Nick Cole: Mollie Moran - James Caan - Mike Joyce
APRONS AND SILVER SPOONS” - MOLLIE MORAN (PENGUIN £6.99): Fans of the TV soap Downton Abbey will love the memoirs of the 96-year-old author who, at the age of 14, became a scullery maid in a stately London town-house. Readers are offered a fascinating insight into the vanished world of household drudgery and high times before the outbreak of the second world war. To add to the appeal the book comes complete with recipes and household tips from a real 1930s kitchen. No doubt Aprons and Silver Spoons will soon be on the small screen. Remarkably Miss Moran now based in Bournemouth finds lots of fun in her life and her book reflects her philosophy in life.
START YOUR BUSINESS IN 7 DAYS” – JAMES CAAN (Penguin £9.99): The third book from the millionaire entrepreneur who has force behind the BBC TV series “Dragon’s Den” for the past six years. Each piece of advice is based on his own 30 years experience of starting businesses and should be well heeded. His guide is also easy to follow as Mr Caan likes to put himself in the place of the treader and question their motivation and determination to succeed. As he points out only 10 per cent of new business ventures actually make good.
SWISSTED - MIKE JOYCE (Quirk Books £26): New York-based designed Mike Joyce has taken vintage rock concert posters from three decades and then remixed and re-imagined them through a Swiss modernist lens. Nirvana, the Sex Pistols, Green Day and Velvet Underground are among the iconic bands featured. As a bonus the book features a total of 200 posters, all miro-perforated and ready to frame. This is fine art for font nerds and Mr Joyce is to be congratulated on his efforts.
