People urged to stop smoking in order to help save NHS cash
MILLIONS of pounds are going up in smoke each year – and people are being urged to make this the year they kick the habit.
NHS Yorkshire And The Humber figures suggest about £24 million is lost from the North Lincolnshire economy in sick days and hospital appointments directly related to smoking each year.
-

quit: Stubbing it out could save the economy millions.
But that figure may be set to drop, with more than 1,400 people signing up to NHS North Lincolnshire's Stop Smoking service over the past year. Frances Cunning, North Lincolnshire's director of public health, is delighted so many people are choosing to quit the habit.
She said: "It is great news that the number of people giving up smoking in North Lincolnshire is on the up.
"Giving up smoking is one of the single most important changes people could make to improve their health.
"Smokers who use NHS Stop Smoking services are four times more likely to quit than those who go it alone."
More than 840 smokers in North Lincolnshire successfully quit as a result of the service, smashing the Government target of 600.
The figures is also the highest the region has achieved since records began in 2001.
David Hardy, the Stop Smoking service manager said: "North Lincolnshire NHS Stop Smoking services offer a range of options to smokers wanting to quit their addiction to tobacco.
"Our advisors work with smokers providing impartial advice and information and will tailor a programme to meet the needs of individual smokers. The service is free, friendly and flexible".
Deborah Arnott, director of the anti-smoking charity Action On Smoking And Health, said: "This is clearly positive news for the North Lincolnshire area and confirmation of the positive benefits of stop smoking services.
"We hope that, in the current climate, funding remains forthcoming to help these services which ease a significant burden on the NHS."

“Smokers STINK - that's a good enough reason to force them to stop. Don't quote spurious statistics as 'facts' either. Drivers contribute far more in taxes than non-drivers, does that entitle them to a say on whether bus routes should be subsidised?
For long enough we annoying smokers stinking out pubs and restaurants and annoying the majority, we may be trying to make them healthier but they are still selfish and dim.”

“Here's a suggestion, stop wasting millions a year of smoking cessation products that have a 98.4% failure rate, encourage people to pay for and use electronic cigarettes, do away with all the departments that are costing the NHS £350 million a year to promote smoking cessation failure and hey presto the NHS saves money.
Oh by the way the smoker contributes 0n average 5 times more in taxes than the non smoking which is 4 times more than the entire cost of NHS treatment of smoking related ill health.
But hey don't let a little thing like facts get in the way.”

“You may be a single mum of 5, Sharon, but you're not grown up! If you didn't spend your childrens' living on fags you would have more than enough to bring them up on. Get real.”

“Put more into catching those who supply cigs and booze which have not had VAT and Duty paid on them, smugglers, distributors, those that act as agents to sell it on to others (many are OAP's who know they will not be suspects), barbers shops, corner shops and the ends users.
Issue heavy fines, confiscate boats, motor vehicles and houses used in the process of distributing and selling, lock up any one found with any in their possesion that have not had VAT & Duty paid, that way the goverment would pull in more tax, force some people to cut drinking and smoking and proceeds can be used to improve the NHS for real health care, NOT free IVF, virginity replacement, sex change or any other none health situations. Make ALL who have replacement joints or any transplants contribute towards the cost with no stupid means testing so only 10% of recipients actually pay, people could take out top up insurance for these things.”

“There's the phrase's;
"Yummy Mummy" & "Scummy Mummy".
Sharon falls into the latter catagory and would fit in well with the Gunness crowd.”

“What a pathetic argument that taxes will be lost if people stop smoking. Taxes which give people options on whether to buy what they don't actually need are the best options for raising money and protecting the poorest (assuming they are smart enough to have some budgeting skills, many don't) - but money spent on tobacco would end up being spent on other taxed consumables so the government still gets their share. Sharon has to be joking, alternatively she's the joke.”

“If everyone stopped smoking the Government would lose masses in taxes. Not only that but it appears that non-smokers live longer. Huge cost again to the Government in extra state pensions. Where is the saving?”

“Please tell me that Sharon's letter was someone having a little joke, she claims to have a pittance to bring her 5 children up on (no doubt the pittance is all made up from benefits which I work 7 days a week to pay my fair share of income tax to fund people like her), does she realise that she will stink of cigarette smoke and so will her children and so will her house, has she any idea of what nearly £2000 per year she spends in smoking could be better spent on - you choose to have kids so kids should come first, second and third and it's a very selfish person who, when admitting to being 'on a pittance' then chooses to spend a large proportion of that pittance on herself. God help those kids. They too, no doubt will eventually end up on the dole, or claiming benefits and sending up my hard earned cash in smoke. I used to smoke, I had no kids, I worked full time and I chose to stop - I'm not saying it's easy but it can be done and there's plenty of help out there now which hasn't always been the case.”
