Students were also given information on careers with The Corps of Army Music military band, as well as other areas of the army.
Band master Andrew Birkett said: "We're here to interact with the kids and provide them with as much musical help as we can.
"It may be something they are thinking about doing as a career or it may just be a hobby, either way it's all about having fun and developing as musicians."
The woodwind band is one of only 22 army bands based in the UK.
The band, based in Royston, near Cambridge, holds training session days throughout Yorkshire and the East Midlands to raise awareness of an often overlooked army career.
Frederick Gough pupil Hannah Baldwin, 15, certainly felt the day would benefit her fledgling music career.
She said: "It's been really tough and really intense. It's a step up from what we're used to, but that's good because we've learned a lot.
