Bride-to-be Alice decides not to have hen 'do' to focus on cancer battle of partner Liam Thompson of Broughton

A bride-to-be has decided not to have a hen do in a bid to focus on her partner's battle with cancer.

Alice Faulkner, 21, of Broughton, is due to marry her fiance Liam Thompson at St Hybald's Church, Scawby, on October 21.

The whirlwind wedding has been organised in a joint campaign between the Scunthorpe Telegraph and local businesses who have come forward to help the couple.

Mr Thompson, 22, has finished his third and final round of chemotherapy, which aims to blitz his cancer.

He was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in August last year and the couple brought forward their wedding plans after his condition worsened last month.

Mr Thompson had to spend a long spell in St James's University Hospital in Leeds last week after he came down with an infection.

Now the couple are focusing on getting Mr Thompson in the best health possible ahead of their big day.

Miss Faulkner said: "I don't think we'll be having a hen or stag do – we'll just be keeping it quiet.

"Liam will be still on the mend and I'm not bothered about a hen do."

More kind offers have been taken up by the couple, including an offer from the church organist and the church warden, who waived their fees so the couple now only have to pay costs for the church – towards which businesses and residents have helped contribute.

Staff and residents of Abbey Village care home in Brigg donated £245 towards the wedding.

Manager Joy Pounds said: "Everybody who works for me is part of the family. Liam is part of our family at Abbey Village and it is only right that we do everything possible to help Liam have a wonderful wedding day.

"I've known him a long time and he's a wonderful young man who is very brave. We are very supportive towards his mum Michelle, who has gone through so much.

"The staff and residents are very close to Michelle.

"We have been there for her through tears and laughter."

Meanwhile, Brigg Karate has donated £250 to the couple.

Owner Gary Wright, and his partner Midge Antic, decided to help the couple as the club supports the Teenage Cancer Trust charity.

Miss Antic said: "Three of Liam's cousins come to karate so before Christmas we donated £500 to the couple after we raised £1,100 in a fundraising event and we've just donated another £250 for the wedding."
