INDUSTRY: Road tanker operator Lewis Tankers has won a three-year contract from Vivergo Fuels to handle UK distribution of bioethanol from the company's new £350m biorefinery at Saltend, near Hull.
The plant, which is scheduled to become fully operational in the first quarter of this year, will eventually produce 420 million litres annually, making Vivergo Fuels the UK's single biggest bioethanol producer.
Lewis Tankers, which is headquartered in Hensall, near Goole, will utilise a fleet of dedicated road tanks to distribute the bioethanol to the refineries of the UK's major fuel suppliers, where it will be blended with gasoline to meet the UK Government's targets under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation.
Stewart MacDonald, Lewis Tankers' managing director, said: "This is an important contract win for us. We will be responsible for all Vivergo Fuels' UK distribution, which, when production reaches full capacity, means we will have a fleet of 20-plus dedicated road tanks delivering more than 3.5 million litres of bioethanol every week."

RETAIL: Supermarket chain Morrisons has admitted its Christmas sales were below par after feeling the heat from rivals in a "highly promotional" market.
The UK's fourth-biggest grocer reported a 2.5 per cent decline in like-for-like sales for the six weeks to December 30.
Despite the latest drop in sales, which follows a 2.1 per cent decline in the previous quarter, Morrisons said it remained on track to meet profit expectations.
EVENT: The University of Hull is to host a landmark seminar describing how the region can reduce energy bills, cut carbon emissions and create jobs all at the same time.
It will be held at the university's Business School today, from 4pm to 6pm. The event will see the launch of a new report conducted specifically for the Humber, by the Centre for Low Carbon Futures.
