A classic musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein is coming to the Vale Academy later this month as Brigg Amateur Operatic Society performs Carousel.

The show follows young mill-worker Julie, who falls in love with a fairground barker, Billy. After they get married and lose their jobs, Billy has to find a new way of supporting his wife and his unborn child.

Society chairman Peter Barnes said: "There are a lot of things to take into consideration when you pick a show: can you stage things in the venue? Does it need a lot of good sight readers to manage the music? Is it popular? Carousel is very lively and there's a lot of popular music, so I think it will be good."

Leading man Lindsey Pepper is making his debut with the society, although he has previously played the role with Scunthorpe Operatic Society.

Katie Graham is once again the leading lady and is supported by an experienced cast, including Terri-Ann Heseltine, David Arrand, Trudie Jackson, Bev Evans, Dan Busby, Ashley Bateson and Felice Malaspina.

There are around 40 people appearing on stage during the show, with another seven backstage, including two new stage managers.

The society has been running for 109 years and has put on more than 90 performances, focusing mainly on musical productions. They say they have been forced to increase their prices slightly this year to allow for rising costs.

"We're still far and away the cheapest in the area," said Peter. "We've always kept our prices as low as possible. It's hard to compare to other productions because as we perform at a school we have fewer facilities than a group that performs at the Plowright Theatre."

The show opens on Tuesday, October 30 and runs until Saturday, November 3. Shows start at 7.30pm and cost £7. The Saturday matinee starts at 2.30pm and costs £6. All performances are in Westmoor Hall at The Vale Academy in Brigg.
