Lincoln United 1 Brigg Town 0 - NEW YEAR'S DAY MATCH REPORT BY BOB TAYLOR
Greg Archer was unavailable but Fisher and Paczkowski returned and Bruno Holden was included in the starting line up. Lincoln started the match with an attack down the right wing in the first minute with Jordan Hempenstall getting the ball across the Brigg goal area for Ben Garrick, - but his strike went wide of the far post. Then Jordan Hempenstall was cautioned for dissent after fouling Paul Grimes on the half way line. Liam Davis was the first to threaten for Brigg when he raced on to a through ball down the middle but his shot went wide. Bruno Holden and Liam Davis combined neatly but the latter's strike at goal was blocked. Paul Grimes slotted a ball forward for Bruno Holden to get another shot at goal but he failed to test the goalkeeper. Brigg settled well and were having most possession in the opening stages and Josh Davies linked up with Liam Davis before the ball was pulled back for Alex Flett to drive another shot wide. An in-swinging left wing corner kick from Josh Davies put the home 'keeper , Phil McGann. under pressure but the ball was eventually cleared from the penalty area. Brigg came closest to scoring when a long free kick found Scott Hellewell at the far post but his header was directed across the face of the goal and out of play. Lincoln responded before half time with Jordan Hempenstall and Ben Garrick combining well but Mark Dudley cleared the latter's shot off the goal line. Ryan Paczkowski went close after good work by Bruno Holden and Liam Davis and then in the last action of the first half, Paul Grimes had a shot tipped over the bar by Phil McGann.
Brigg started slowly in the second half and Jordan.Hempenstall had a good chance to put the hosts ahead in the opening minutes but dragged a shot wide but then set up an opportunity for Scott Coupland, whose shot also missed the target. Brigg gradually began to get more possession of the ball in mid-field but the Lincoln defence was firm and well organised, preventing them from really testing out the goalkeeper. Efforts from Bruno Holden and Mark Dudley went close but not close enough. The game ended in controversy with two minutes of normal time remaining. Brigg mounted a strong attack on their opponents' goal and had strong appeals for a hand to ball offence in the goal area waved aside by the Assistant Referee and the Lincoln defence booted the ball clear and up the pitch for substitute SIMON MOWBRAY win possession before sending a looping shot over Jamie Green into the back of the net, so winning all three points for the home team.
