A menu that gets my taste buds tingling before I have even seen the food means either two things – it is a complete winner or I am too hungry to care.

So when my partner and I decided to try a pub set in the heart of a historic market town, we were not disappointed.

Cooked to perfection: 8oz sirloin steak with new potatoes and vegetables.

Went down a treat: Chicken brie and garlic melt with chips and salad.

The White Horse, in Brigg, is a quaint pub with enough tables to make you feel comfortable and relaxed (I never like overcrowded restaurants).

We were greeted at the door by friendly staff who showed us to our table. I ordered a large glass of wine and my partner chose a pint of beer.

Not only was there a sufficient choice of dishes as standard, but the pub also had a wide selection of specials on a chalkboard.

We decided to have a starter and a main course. I chose soup with warm crusty bread for £3.50, and my partner had the chef’s homemade chicken liver and brandy pate served with warm crusty bread and homemade plum compote pate for £4.96.

We devoured these, much to our delight, and were soon ready for the main.

I opted for a well-done 8oz serloin steak, and was given the choice of a variety of potatoes, salad or vegetables – I chose new potatoes with vegetables which all came to £14.95.

My partner chose the chicken brie and garlic melt, served with chips and salad for £11.95.

My steak was cooked to perfection, piping hot, and the potatoes and vegetables came in a separate pot so I could fill my plate with as much as I liked.

The only downfall is I wished there could have been more!

My partner’s meal was topped with bacon and oven baked with garlic butter; he could really taste the flavours throughout and as a cheese fan was not disappointed with the amount of brie.

The food was hearty and plenty of it, which is what I enjoy the most. There is no better satisfaction than leaving a venue feeling full.
