LEAGUE Two Bury have today confirmed Scunthorpe United have approached them with a view to appointing Alan Knill as the Iron's new manager.

Shakers chairman Brian Fenton this morning revealed he had had contact with United, before a statement later appeared on the club's official website.

Fenton told the Bury Times: "Everything is up in the air at the moment.

"As things stand, Alan Knill is the Bury manager until further notice."

Knill has been linked with the Iron post all week, with speculation linking the 46-year-old former Iron defender with a return to Glanford Park refusing to go away.

He is the man Scunthorpe want to succeed Ian Baraclough, who was sacked a fortnight ago with United struggling in the Championship relegation zone.

The Iron told the Telegraph last night the job had not been offered to anybody but they were hopeful of making an appointment before the weekend. They have not confirmed Knill is their top choice.

"Bury Football Club can confirm that there has now been contact from another club wishing to take Alan Knill as their manager," said a statement issued by the Shakers at lunchtime.

"As of 13:40 on Wednesday 30 March, there have been no further developments since contact was made earlier today.

"We will update all supporters of any further developments once we have further news."

“I came,i saw,i met the chairman and thought "my god somebody wake me up what a frightful dump, even Bury fc has a decent dining restaurant at Starkies, besides this gives me a good excuse to ask for a pay rise now i am so popular,i'm sure i could be the best paid manager in League 2.Swansea City were linked with Ak earlier in the season but it came to nothing no interview.I don't believe the Acount Ak has come up with saying that it is because he and Bury fc are doing so well that he has been linked with so many positions. It's all down to his time at Sufc being a former player like Micky Adams at Sheff utd.Come on Grovesy please please take the job at Glanford park,Frankenstein will be just fine on his own at Upton park”

“This saga is really beginning to drag i just wished it would come to a swift resolution.Nobody seems to know what the next step is and it is like Marieantoinette awaiting her impending death for all of us poor suffering shaker fans. The dithering board at Scunthorpe isn't helping matters with the University educated Mr.Beeby at the helm.Although it would deeply disappoint me that Alan might leave there is a strange similarity because he left Bury fc in late 1980's to join Scunny for 4 years, the same length of time he spent at Gigg lane.Maybe we should employ Brian Laws,oh sorry i forgot he's too busy taking his wife or is mother to the coast when she's not knitting.Did anyone know his wife is a devoted Wednesdayite?,I agree with Grandemaster wake me up when this has all been resolved.”

“Great appointment by the club. Think this guy will be a sensation in managing the Iron. You have to look beyond the doom and gloom impression he gives off and realise theres one heck of a manager in there. Too many football managers nowadays want to see a "named" manager at their clubs. How often do they actually bring success though ? Not very! Alan will be a success and I for one can not wait for Carrow Road on Saturday. Bring it on!”

“Should have advertised the post in the summer, rather than sacking Baraclough with no replacement lined up at this point in the season.

    Up the Iron!”
