United must aspire to be more like Everton says goalscorer Collins
GOALSCORER Michael Collins believes Scunthorpe United have learned an important lesson the hard way.
The Iron suffered a 5-1 thumping at the hands of Everton in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday, with the midfielder's second half effort turning out to be no more than a consolation.

But with Championship survival now their only focus, Collins wants to see his team take a leaf out of their Premier League visitors' book.
Dismissing any suggestions of a possible cup hangover when it comes to Leeds this weekend, the former Huddersfield man is keen for United to replicate the Toffees' efforts.
"If we can learn from Everton and aspire to be like that, then that's a positive we can take out of the game," he said.
"We've got to look at them and take what they did to us into the league.
"They could have come here and not fancied it. But every single player, including the subs, has given 100 per cent.
"You can see why they play in the Premier League and earn the money they do.
"We've got to take that into our games now and make sure everyone is fighting 100 per cent.
"If we have anybody who isn't giving 100 per cent for the cause then we'll get found out.
"If you're not good enough when you've done that, then you hold your hands up and say 'fair enough'.
"But if you're not giving 100 per cent, that's not acceptable.
"There's a way to lose, and that's making sure you give everything on the pitch and come off knowing you couldn't have given any more.
"If you come off the pitch feeling you could have given more, then us as individuals will say that's not good enough.
"But to a man, I can say nobody's been in that mind frame. Everyone has given as much as they possibly can."
For Collins, his goal comes as a timely confidence boost.
The 24-year-old hasn't yet been able to establish himself at Glanford Park having this season suffered from a shoulder problem.
"I've always felt I'll be able to contribute goals," he said.
"Sometimes it's a little bit more difficult when you're playing out on the wing. I've said before, that's not my natural position but wherever the gaffer wants me to play, I'll put a shift in.
"It's been a bit of a stop-start season. I picked up the injury and missed an eight-week spell with the cancellations as well.
"It's hard sometimes when you play one game here and one game there because you don't get into a rhythm.
"If I can get as many games as I possibly can now, I think I'll feel better."

“Spot on ¿Steve, Scunny¿. The home 'support' if you can call it that doesn't deserve a team in the second tier. Negative, unconstructive, downbeat. Yes the team are playing badly at home, yes they¿re not playing the football they have done in the past, but with such an uninspiring bunch of fickle fans behind them, why is it such a surprise they are playing with no confidence?
The resentment towards Forte is ridiculous. I¿m not disputing he¿s not a Championship striker, I¿m not disputing he¿s not going to score 10 goals a season let alone 20, but he¿s the best striker we¿ve got! People who say he doesn¿t put a shift in haven¿t got a clue. The amount of balls he has to chase down, compete for, challenge 6ft plus centre backs for; he is at times our only outlet, and is a necessity with the football we are playing at the moment (as poor as it is). It was evident when he came off against Watford the other week how important he is to the team at the moment. Dagnell is not nearly good enough for this league. For all his tenacity and work rate, his first touch is poor, his technique is awkward and he is too lightweight. Thommo hasn¿t been fit all season so has hardly justified a place in the starting frontline. Godden may turn into a good player, and i hope he does, but at the moment he is not ready to start a game at this level which leaves us with... Jonno is a confidence player, and for those that see him away from home can see, when he is confident, he can bully an opposition defence. The travelling contingent always seem to get behind him, chant his name, will him to score, and in return are rewarded. I just wish the home fans would open their eyes and see that until we get a striker in, which we desperately need, getting behind the current crop would have a far greater effect than berating them every week.
Also, this calling for Wharton¿s head, please tell me who we are to replace him with? No one is interested in putting money into this club, and why should they be with such paltry home attendances. He¿s staying and I for one am pleased with this.
Don¿t confuse me as a ¿happy-clapper¿, I¿m just a realist. With home support as it is, the players haven¿t got the confidence to play a risky pass, a quick one two, a drilled ball to feet, because if they mess up, the crowd jump on their back so quickly and with such negativity they¿re happier playing an aimless long ball up the pitch.
GET BEHIND THE TEAM. UTI”

“Its not true that no new fans are going to GP.
I took my son on Saturday for his first ever game.
He was left with the impression that if you are a home supporter , you are to sit (or stand) quietly (as if in a Library ) and only make the occasional noise if you team scores (then only for a couple of mins and then revert back to type).
On the other hand if you support Everton and are outnumbered you should sing the whole game through (in fact they were a bit loud for his very young ears). He did actually shout come on Scunthorpe but was left wondering if his Dad had played a joke on him as no one else was joining in!
He also thinks you should get up and go home half way through and he now thinks we lost a game the crowd were playing as we were the only ones left on our row after the 5th goal went in.
I'm sure you'll all find your own justification and say that your mums had told you to be home by 5 but the attitude from the fans was a disgrace.
As if we were still going to get a result at 4:1, what difference did it make that we conceded a fifth?
It just showed the team on the pitch a lack of respect and support which was completely unncessary. We never get a result against Premiership opposition. Yes we sometimes give them a better game but we always lose. We know htat before we head off to the game - so why insult the tteam by walking out?
And the same people are asking for better quality players to come and entertain them? To put their careers on the line ? To move their families to the area to share in our shopping experience? Why should they?
Bara has got this team winning games away from home. So they can play. Just maybe the team actually respond better to the away support, because its support, not just a crowd of church mice.
We have hardly ever been vocal at GP or the OSG but I know that when the fans have really put a shift in the team have responded. Some passion off the field has garnered passion on the field so come on show some support!
As for the display - A Wright's defending was fine but his distribution was lacking. It's no use hanging crosses up for the likes of Fellaini and Distan to intercept. If he has to cross get it low and hard and give the boys up front some sort of chance. Everton seemed to have worked this out so Wright was always left as the one with space for our out ball leaving him to have to pick a pass.
I thought Collins had a poor first half and seemed low on confidence so a big surprise when he smacked that ball in - well done!
Wooly hardly saw any of the ball, and has Nolan now gone into his shell having signed his contract? He hardly crossed the half way line when his strength has been going forward.
Better quality oposition of course but before Saha received the ball for the first goal I shouted he was in too much space, team as a whole has to put in far more effort to close quality players down. Then get the ball and keep it on the deck!”

“I was busy slagging him off when he went and scored. He was garbage beforehand, and garbage afterwards. Unfortunately the best of the new signings have only been average, and Collins and the rest poor. The damage was done in the summer, and we won't be able to reverse it in January.”

“80k on Adam Boyes, 120k on Ben May, 50k on Micheal Collins, 400k on Rob Jones? Not the best of records - wasnt Bobby Grant 200k as well?
Collins was really poor on Saturday - I'm disapointed in him because in flashes he has shown he has the ability but clearly not the fight....three months out with a broken finger at Huddersfield too..”

“And this is another guy that Adkins paid money for ! I don't think his track record on purchases was anything to shout about.
Give Bara a break. He inherited nothing and can't recruit anyone worthwhile. He'll be ok next season in Lge 1.”

“Only a great goal saved Collins from the dubious award of 'WORST GAME SINCE RICHARD FOY' on Saturday - utterly anonomous!
100%? I didnt see one tackle fly in for entire first half - Everton were there for the taking on Saturday and in todays press, Moyes admitted changing his plans to show the Toffees around GP for five mins (that was the full tour, changing rooms, tea urn, the lot!) when passing on Friday - and yet we were as feeble as I've ever seen - in fact, I challenge any Iron fan to name a more lacklutre, feeble FA Cup in our history because I cant recall one.
Utter garbage Iron and Collins...deary me - by far the worst of a bad bunch.
Up the Iron!”

“Scunthorpes game at home to Preston North End has been re-arranged for Saturday 29th January.
How long before this cutting edge rag has it as breaking news.

Put a shift in, joking right?
Think Collins must have been watching Grant McCant.
He was none existant apart from his goal, passing was awful and never tracked is man once. Yeah well done Collins you put a shift in, for all of 30 seconds in the second half!!”
