Cannabis grown by unemployed Scunthorpe man 'as money saving measure'
A Scunthorpe man took to growing his own cannabis after he became unemployed, North Lincolnshire Magistrates' Court heard.
Richard Gibb, 28, of Frodingham Road, admitted producing cannabis at his address on December 3.

Steve Baggott, mitigating, said this was purely a money-saving measure.
Gibb was given a 12-month community order with 120 hours' unpaid work, £85 costs and a victim surcharge of £60. Magistrates also ordered forfeiture of the drugs and equipment.

“yes @sour alien, blatant abuse of the system. we need to remember that prohibition pays the few ;) it pays them enough that they place shrills and bots/people to do this.”

“How much did this pointless prosecution cost the taxpayer? Wake up and smell the cannabis, this country cannot afford to keep persecuting peaceful cannabis users.”

“@Matt507
Its most likely one person who has figured out to manipulate the voting system. Someone with a misguided view of prohibition and with too much time on their hands.”

“Its obvious a pathetic prohibitionist with too much time on their hands is manipulating the voting system, once again, on thisis sites. They think it makes a difference, how sad. Little does the scum bag know, legal regulation is inevitable. No matter how many read arrows one gives to people expressing the reality of prohibition.”

“Victim's charge - how ridiculous - the only victims in this case is the man that had his private life interfered with without justification and the taxpayers that pay the police and court bills.
It is quite plain in Human Rights law, both national and international, the criteria under which authorities are justifiable in interfering with our Human right to a Private Life and personal belief and practice of that belief: there being a law against whatever it is, is not in itself justification: it must be shown that the activity threatens public health, public order, national security or the Rights of others.
Growing a few plants FOR OWN USE does not.
This man ought never have been arrested and prosecuted - I am sure the police could find something more productive to do - like go after the drug dealers than sell bad and impure drugs to gullible people.
Who though will profit from this case - those very same dealers.”

“Once again I find myself disheartened by reading yet an other story where some one was trying to grow a few cannabis plants in the privacy of their own home, which led to a criminal conviction, fine, 12-month community order with 120 hours' unpaid work, £85 costs and a victim surcharge of £60.
Who really is the victim here ?? It certainly isn't the police or magistrates and it isn't you or I. The true victim is the gent the story is about (yet this gent isn't given the victim surcharge, so whom does that go to ?).
He was minding his own business trying not to fund organised crime by purchasing cannabis from street dealers (which can often be contaminated and very poor quality) instead he tried to grow his own therefore reducing the risk of harm to himself.
He had lost his job and if in local authority housing he may end up losing his home all of this I find disgusting and so should you the person reading this.
Once again we have vital funds being wasted on these kinds of prosecutions while our services are going down the pan.
The amount of revenue that could be accumulated through a slight change in drug laws is astronomical, we would have a thriving NHS, council services, police force and the Government wouldn't have to reform welfare and benefits. We would also see a drop in unemployment figures as people that have been convicted of this victimless crime could actually seek employment within the cannabis industry. Equally we wouldn't see taxpayers money being abused in this way.
Cannabis is an amazing plant and has many uses ranging from medicinal benefits to being a great resource for construction industry ie Hempcrete.
Why can't we in the UK have similar laws to that in the Netherlands enabling us to have a few plants per household for those that wish to grow and coffeeshops for those whom can't or don't want to ?
Support NORML UK and your local cannabis clubs they can be found on the web and via facebook, help to make change for those in the UK that desperately need cannabis legalised.”

“What the people who thumb down fail to realise is that this man is now going to turn to ORGANISED crime to obtain cannabis instead of growing it freely in his own home, free from harm.”

“Cannabis is NOT a gateway drug, in no way does it contain any properties that suggest it is, this has been scientifically proven. It's the DEALERS that push harder drugs onto their clients.
Get RID of the prohibition of cannabis, ALLOW citizens to grow cannabis, ELIMINATE dealers and a large part of ORGANISED CRIME, make our streets SAFER, allow a lot of people in the UK their MEDICINE.
If you don't believe me, you have the whole of the internet at your disposal, just do a little research. Or thumbs down my comment out of sheer ignorance, the choice is yours.”

“Let this poor man save his money. What good is it for him to buy his cannabis from drug dealers? It's better if he grows his own.
Also we should just regulate the sale of cannabis like alcohol instead of this stupid prohibition business.”
