Hundreds of people attending late night Christmas shopping events in Ashby, Scunthorpe and Brigg will be able to enjoy free late afternoon and early evening car parking.

This will be made possible by a season of goodwill municipal car parking concession from North Lincolnshire Council.

Free parking will be available for people visiting Brigg for the annual Christmas fair and late night shopping evening on November 30. This busy scene at last year's event was taken by Ken Harrison, of Wrawby

And money put in meters by drivers who do not realise payment is unnecessary during these concessionary periods will be donated to mayoral charities, rather than going into council coffers.

Car parking charges will be "relaxed" after 4pm in Scunthorpe and Ashby on the following five Thursdays: November 22 and 29; December 6, 13 and 20.

Free parking will also be available in Brigg on Thursday, November 30 - the night when the market town's Christmas lights will be switched on prior to Brigg District Lions' annual Christmas Fair.

The council's aim is to encourage shoppers to use town centres "in this key shopping period."

A council report says: "Contacts with town centre traders highlight the importance of the pre-Christmas period to their businesses in what are currently challenging trading conditions for retailers.

"Adopting the proposal provides a positive response to this feedback."

Councillor Nigel Sherwood (Brigg and Wolds), Cabinet Member of Highways and Neighbourhoods, approved the waiving of car parking charges from 4pm on those six dates.

The amount donated to mayoral charities last year from the same period was almost £1,300.

“Online shopping is great, the only thing is you don't know the quality of the article you're buying, especially clothes, shoes etc.
I've stopped shopping for clothes in catalogues completely, because I've received the wrong size clothes in the correct marked packages. Dress and matching skirt combinations that arrive six weeks apart and are differing colours, so get sent back, and then they have the cheek to bill me for late returns.
I told all my family last year not to buy me presents as I was not buying them any, easiest Christmas I've ever had. I only buy for my three grandchildren, and their presents are all wrapped up, waiting for the big day. I just got fed up of being asked if I'd still got the receipt or seeing disappointed faces when pressies unwrapped.
So, no, I won't be taking advantage of any free parking on offer either.”

“I really can't be bothered. It's online shopping for me. Very low prices, a whole World to buy from, no snotty shopkeepers or rude staff, delivered to my door, no undesirable customers... why waste my time struggling around a dump?”

“Free parking on Thursday evenings for the 5 consecutive Thursdays up to Christmas.

Nice try, but simply a token gesture in an attempt to appease the masses.

Most people with transport will be Christmas shopping elsewhere, maybe not with free parking but with a greater range of shops to choose from - and most of it indoors.”
