A CANCER charity for runners is appealing for Scunthorpe superheroes to come forward.

Run 4 Cancer was set up by a group of running enthusiasts who have all lost a close friend or relative to cancer. Managed entirely on a voluntary basis, the charity provides short-breaks for families living with cancer and makes grants to palliative care centres.

The charity is recruiting superheroes for this year's Superheroes Run, which takes place in Regent's Park, London, on Sunday, May 19.

The Superheroes Run attracts 3,000 superheroes every year and hundreds more spectators. Open to all runners from the age of eight upwards, the course is also suitable for disabled people in wheelchairs.

For the £20 entry fee, Run 4 Cancer supporters receive a free superhero suit – runners can choose from Superman, Supergirl, Batman or Batgirl.  To encourage runners to continue their work as a superhero after the run, participants are also able to keep their superhero suits after the race.

For 2013, two distances are available – either 5Km or 10Km. Both circuits take in the sights of London's Regent's Park, which covers

395 acres and is the largest outdoor sports area in central London, encompassing London's Open Air Theatre, London Zoo and Primrose Hill.

To take part, runners are asked to raise a minimum sponsorship fund of £100.

In addition to being given a free superhero suit, each participant will receive a secure online fundraising page on Run 4 Cancer's website to collect both donations and words of encouragement.

Registrations can be made online at http://www.run4cancer.org/superhero-run-london-may-2013
