NORTH Lincolnshire's charity shops are bearing up well to the recession, local managers have said.

Cancer Research UK is refitting its Scunthorpe branch and Oxfam is holding sales to keep customers hunting for bargains.

Cancer Research UK manager Ann Barton said: "We want to update the shop because it's been here for about 19 years. It needs a new look.

"The floor is being put down by a professional company but a lot of the work is being done by volunteers.

"We're hoping to get the work done in a week. All the stock is prepared and everything is ready."

Workers are needed to help out with repainting, stocking shelves and preparing goods for the shelves.

Julie Leveson, manager of the Brigg and Scunthorpe branches of Oxfam, said: "We're not doing too badly but Oxfam is lucky because we have a very loyal customer base.

"We're not getting the quality of donations we need before the recession - people are tending to hang onto stuff.

"We are having regular sales which is helping. Scunthorpe regularly has a sale when all ladies clothing is 50p.

"In Brigg now we have got a half price sale on all ladies clothing."
