RETAIL: East Yorkshire retailers are being offered early Christmas cheer with new findings that show most shoppers are planning to spend the same amount of money or more this Christmas than they did last year.

The survey, by HSBC, found the average resident will typically splash out £526 on family and friends.

Younger people were particularly optimistic about being able to increase their festive spending this year, with 29 per cent of people aged 18 to 24 saying they plan to up their Christmas spend.

George Charalam- bous, HSBC head of current accounts, said: "Our research shows that, once again, households want to put financial difficulties to one side and celebrate this special time of the year."
