Mr Clarke said it was important that Red Tractor provided quality assurance.

He said: "It is a guarantee that the ingredients have come from British farms that we know about.

"Some local authorities have had sufficient foresight to have bought into Red Tractor early.

"If North Lincolnshire has bought in, then best of luck to them.

"We really do have a big opportunity to make it fair and for the farmers in your area, that is a really big opportunity for them."

North Lincolnshire Council provides more than 10,000 meals a day in more than 60 primary schools and nine secondary schools.
