CAMPAIGNERS have slammed a live elephant circus which is set to roll into Scunthorpe's Glanford Park this week.

The Great British Circus will perform with three elephants at the ground between March 10 and March 15, a move which has been condemned by opponents.

North Lincolnshire Green Party spokeswoman Jan Clark said: "It sends out a very negative view of the town to a lot of people. And I'm very concerned about the animals' welfare. It's barbaric."

Jeff Link, communications manager for the circus, said the animals were all well-treated.

He said: "We don't think the people in Scunthorpe should be bullied. They can come along and make up their own minds.

"People are going to vote with their feet."
