Yorkshire car hire firm is a classic
WITH rolling green hills and miles of breathtaking scenery, our region is blessed with picturesque landscape.
Classic Car Hire Yorkshire and VW Classic Camper Hire is one business taking advantage of this.
Providing vintage vehicles for either driving along the winding country roads or through the towns, the business, based near Pocklington, was launched four years ago by Niki Garnett-White.
Niki said: "There aren't many girls that are petrolheads, but I have always loved cars."
The business started with a Porsche.
Niki said: "I bought a Porsche from some friends and, although I loved it, I didn't feel protective over it, so I thought, why not hire it out?"
When Niki launched her company in 2008, she had the opportunity to invest her money in some more cars to kick-start the business.
The next vehicle to join Classic Car Hire was a Corvette – referred to as the "courgette" by her daughter, who was two at the time.
After buying a few sports cars in one go, the business began to build up, but according to Niki, it was a slow start.
"It was a slow take-off. I had to try to get my name out there. It was about getting people to think they would want to hire a car," Niki said.
A Ford Mustang, a Morris Minor, a Corvette Stingray, an Alfa Romeo Spider and a Mini Cooper all followed and there are now ten cars and two VW Campers.
As the popularity of classic VW Campers soared, Niki decided to take advantage of this emerging trend.
Now, the business attracts customers who want to hire them for parties, weddings or holidays.
Niki said: "We bought one and then quickly bought another because they were proving so popular."
Customers can find a black one and a deep purple one to cruise around in.
But Niki said she did not even like Campers before investing in them.
"I thought, 'gosh I am going to have to drive one of those', but as soon as I got in, I just flipped," Niki said.
"People were waving at me and I was transformed.
"Their following has been incredible."
Niki's son William, 15, has picked up the bug, too.
Niki said: "He used to ring me and say, 'I have missed the bus, so please can you come and pick me up? I have some friends with me, too' and I would go out and pick him up in one of the Campers."
With a variety of cars, the business is attracting people from across the country.
Niki said: "We have met some great people doing this and every year the most popular car changes.
"They are grinning from ear to ear and we get that warm fuzzy feeling because we have made that dream come true for them.
"People come with their picnics and then drive off to the coast.
"We can plan routes for people and recommend places for them to stay, too.
"It is fun. We get a good feeling from doing something that makes people happy. It is a happy business."
