The Comet store in Scunthorpe is closing.

Although no official announcement has been made, signs outside the premises on the Lakeside Retail Park near Ashby Ville tell their own story, revealing "everything must go."

Scunthorpe was not among those stores across the country included in a list of closures announced a few days ago.

However, there has been growing speculation about the future of the Scunthorpe outlet.

“Years ago groups of computer stores bought monitors in bulk from a UK company then sold the warranty back to manufacturer replacing it with their own insurance based warranty, I contacted the manufacturer over a cable fault and they explained it to me, but gave me a free cable. Shows you need to check who is to honour the warranty if it goes wrong.”

“i bought an item some years back it was faulty after a year so i complained it was a make that stated four year warranty , but was told comet bought the goods from supplier without their warranty at a lower price and sold people their own warranty , so extended warranty's may be worthless .”

“Been doing a bit of digging and it seems that comments on some web sites about the company that owns comet buying up customer returns in large quantities from the manufacturers are quickly and mysteriously disappearing. MMMMM”

“johnjohn I have just tried trading standards & basically been told it isn't worth persuing because the administrators are working the system, as I paid on bank card I will have the last laugh though as the bank will refund me after 15 days by launching a payment dispute.
hatty I was told by the guy who first served me that they were bought by a company who asset stripped them to make money and the staff have known whats been going on since early this year, apparently the lease runs out on the scunthorpe store on 23rd Dec so they will be all out by christmas eve.
People also need to be aware that the price displayed on the shelf may not neccesarily be the price you pay at the till. I was also going to buy another item but picked up on the fact they tried to charge me double the displayed price.”

“You know, for the life of me I can't understand how or why Comet have gone bust

If I could sell cheap shoddy merchandise without being held to some kind of warranty I'd be rich beyond my wildest dreams”

“ovl638p you have been treated atrociously and you should be given an apology by the company / administrator. Some retailers though have no morals; all they want you to do is spend your hard earned money on some of the **** they try to pedal. Most staff and customers are treated with contempt by some employers / retailers. I have noticed with several purchases I have made over the years that when you have a problem the retailer you purchased the item from tries to fob you off and want to take no responsibility at all in helping you. The retailer is very quick however at getting money from out of your pocket. I have a very small amount of sympathy for the shop workers concerned as it must be a very difficult emotional time for them, I would think it will be very hard for them to continue to smile knowing that they will be out of a job before Christmas. Perhaps the local authority should look at closing this particular store immediately through some sort of emergency court action due to the fact that it appears they are taking peoples money under false pretences by selling faulty goods and refusing recompense.”

“PLEASED TO SEE IT GOING, THEY WOULDN'T EXCHANGE A FAULTY ITEM THAT WAS BOUGHT A COUPLE OF HOURS EARLIER.”

“I BOUGHT A HEATER FROM THEM BUT WHEN I GOT IT HOME FOUND IT TO BE FAULTY SO TOOK IT BACK TO THE SHOP YESTERDAY. THE ASSISTANT REFUSED TO EXCHANGE IT SO I ASKED TO SPEAK TO THE MAGAGER. SHE ALSO REFUSED AND SAID THAT IT WASN'T HER PROBLEM, A LADY PASSING HAD OVERHEARD THIS AND COMMENTED THAT I STILL HAVE MY CONSUMER RIGHTS. THE MANAGER THEN REPLIED "I DON'T F*&^%£G CARE I'M LOOSING MY JOB" UNFORTUNATELY FOR HER SHE HAD SAID IT RATHER LOUDLY AND WAS OVERHEARD BY MOST OF THE PEOPLE IN THE STORE AND THERE WAS A MASS EXODUS. I THEN GOT ABUSE FROM ANOTHER SALES ASSISTANT AS I WAS WALKING OUT.
I UNDERSTAND THAT OVER THE WEEKEND A SINGLE MOTHER THAT HAD PAID £300 FOR A WASHING MACHINE THAT WAS FAULTY WAS ESCORTED OUT OF THE SHOP IN TEARS BY STAFF AFTER SHE HAD SUFFERED SIMILAR TREATMENT!
A QUICK WORD OF ADVICE FOR ANYONE WHO HAS SUFFERED THE SAME LEVEL OF TREATMENT. IF YOU HAVE PURCHASED AN ITEM ON YOUR BANK CARD GO INTO THE STORE AND ASK FOR YOUR MONEY BACK OR AN EXCHANGE. THE STORE WILL UNDOUBTABLY REFUSE THIS SO 14 DAYS AFTER THE MONEY HAS COME OUT OF YOUR ACCOUNT YOU CAN GO TO YOUR BANK AND RAISE A DISPUTED TRANSACTION AND THE BANK WILL RETURN THE MONEY TO YOUR ACCOUNT.”
