Complaint over Dragons' Den device

THE success of Scunthorpe Dragon-slayer Sharon Wright has led to a complaint to the BBC.

Last month Ms Wright stunned the judges on Dragons’ Den when she pitched on the programme for investment in her business.

The 39-year-old single mum has invented a device called MagnaMole to thread cables through cavity walls.

And the Dragons, who are known for grilling hopeful entrepreneurs and giving some dismissive comments, all wanted to invest.

Since then Ms Wright has been inundated with enquires from around the world.

But a production worker from a company in Wales was less positive.

Super Rod Ltd, based in Gwent, also offers products to route cables and one of its workers is Brian Thomas.

He said they had been producing similar products for years and that as a TV licence payer he was angry he was helping to fund a corporation which advertised a rival product to that of his own company.

In a strongly-worded letter to the BBC, he said: "As a licence payer, I am funding your organisation, thus making me a stakeholder.

"As a stakeholder, please explain why I should compulsorily pay towards a corporation that advertises a threat to my own employment?"

It continued: "I cannot understand how your researchers failed to recognise the competition in the market place, thus permitting your broadcast. These are the views of a hardworking family man who does not want to see his employment jeopardised."

Ms Wright said she was sure Super Rod managing director Malcolm Duncan was a very busy man with a great product. She added: "All respect to him, he has done extremely well.

"It does not take me away from my drive and passion and I will continue to ride the road on the positive journey. I have a patent on my product so it cannot be the same product."

Ms Wright said: "The clever part about mine is the tapered screw cap with the magnet on the end, so it has the facility to align both magnets at whatever angle you are trying to thread the cable."

She said she had thousands of e-mails from all round the world since the programme and is this week moving to bigger offices within the Queensway Business Centre in Scunthorpe to cope with demand.

Ms Wright said: "I’m working 16 hours a day, seven days a week.

"But I’m loving it. I’m going to try and put all the enquires to bed."

Later Mr Duncan told the Telegraph: "I think what should be celebrated here is that you have got two good UK-based companies that are designing innovative products. We offer slightly different solutions for carrying out similar tasks. The good news is all the tradesmen out there have a choice."

Mr Duncan added: "We have no beef with Sharon whatsoever. Let’s look forward to both companies being successful."

The BBC has taken the view that the programme was produced well within the relevant guidelines.

“I have just bought one to compare with the rod system already on the market, the rod system wins, it has far more uses and can handle T&E power cables with it's attachments, MagnaMole only seems usefull for thin coax or thin round power flex, most telephone and aerial cables are fed through corner of window frames so limited use.”

“When I saw this lady on the programme, I thought she was rather too good to be true.
Ah, so her's is not a new product after all.
    Never mind.
The male dragons seemed totally besotted.
    And who could blame them!”

“As a spark, I've been aware that there are similar products on the market but Sharon has found a niche there and richly deserves her success. Anyone that wants to charge me a couple of quid and make my job infinitely easier has my vote. Go Sharon! WooHoo!”

“As I stated before the only bit new is the tips to go on the cable and these are now only £3.25 incl. P&P, they can be used with the rod system we have had for years available as 10 x 33cm rods or 10 x 1m rods with flexible end rod and tips, thinner and more flexible, the other item she mentioned was for threading cables down cavity, there is one available but beware no good if you have cavity wall insulation. Watch the gadgets direct from China a copy of Magnamole will end up on eBay for 1p plus P&P. they have done it with everthing, they ignore patents and copyrights. I had a lot of praise for her until it was anounced it took the help of Hull university who should have known the products were already on the market.”

“If Super Rod's item is patented what's the problem? If it isn't its called free trade, competitive products because we (alledgely) live in a free country and monopolies to fix price/etc are illegal!”

“So she's invented a probe that finds its way through holes, I thought that had been invented years ago!”
