IN MAY 2010, the Big Lottery Fund awarded a grant of more than £470,000 to Pub Is The Hub, to support independent, specialist advice on community ownership and the diversification of pubs.

The grant was part of the Reaching Communities programme, which is investing more than £18.8 million across England to improve local communities and the lives of those most in need.

The money is being channelled into rural areas where shops and services are less likely to be commercially viable.

Armed with funding and with more than 900 square miles of rural countryside to look after, East Riding Council has thrown its weight behind the Pub is the Hub scheme.

Councillor Jane Evison, the council's portfolio holder for economic development, tourism and rural issues, said: "The council is pleased to be working with Pub is the Hub on a scheme which is a 'win-win' as it can both benefit pubs and support rural communities.

"I do urge licensees to attend the launch and find out more about how their pub could diversify to become a hub for the local community."
