Tonight (Friday Sept 21) could see the 2012 Henderson Insurance Scunthorpe Scorpions create their own slice of speedway history by finishing top of the Premier League for the first time.

The Scorpions are already assured of a place in the end-of-season play-offs, where the Premier League championship will be decided.

But finishing top of the table will hold huge prestige to the club – especially since they had never finished better than fifth at this level in 18 previous attempts dating back to 1972 (the fifth place came in 1983).

Last night, Leicester Lions failed to score any points from a 35-59 defeat at Redcar, thereby all but mathematically ending their chances of finishing top of the table.

Therefore, it comes down to the two meetings tonight.

The Scorpions (currently on 47 Premier League match points) host Glasgow Tigers at the Eddie Wright Raceway (7.30pm).

Meanwhile, current league leaders Newcastle Diamonds (currently on 48 match points, with a superior race points difference in the case of a tie on match points) are away at bottom club Plymouth.

If the Scorpions win by 7 points or more tonight (to secure all three match points), the club would move onto 50 points, and that would then require Newcastle to win or draw at Plymouth to stay ahead of Scunthorpe.

If the Diamonds completely fail to score at Plymouth (they suffer a loss of 7 points or more), then the Scorpions could top the table by taking any margin of victory over Glasgow.

Promoter Rob Godfrey said: “This is the biggest night of the history of Scunthorpe Speedway.

“We’ve never, ever had a chance of finishing top of the league before, not at this level anyway.

“We’re going to embrace it, give it a party atmosphere at the Eddie Wright Raceway tonight, and have the scores coming in from Plymouth.

“It’s going to be a huge night."
