LAZY drivers have been warned to stop driving police around the bend by ignoring mini roundabouts.

Traffic police have reminded motorists they face a £30 fine for driving over the tiny traffic calmers.

Figures released by police show 45 drivers were caught and prosecuted for driving over mini roundabouts in the past year.

But a straw poll conducted by the Scunthorpe Telegraph suggests the actual figure is likely to be much higher.

Observations carried out at a mini roundabout on Ferry Road, Scunthorpe, revealed that of 270 cars who passed it in a 20-minute period, 56 per cent drove over the top.

Pc Barry Gardner, casualty reduction officer for North Lincolnshire, said: "Would you consider it appropriate to drive over the centre of Berkeley Circle roundabout? If not, then why would you drive over the middle of a mini roundabout?"

"I would like to remind all drivers it is a legal requirement to pass around the central marked area of all mini roundabouts, unless their vehicle is so large it is incapable of doing so."

The Highway Code stresses mini roundabouts are no different from their full-sized counterparts.

"Approach them in the same way as normal roundabouts. All vehicles must pass round the central markings except large vehicles, which are physically incapable of doing so."

“sod the mini roundabouts, why don't the police or even traffic wardens start putting tickets on cars that are parked illeagally,on yellow lines .abandonded in the middle of the road or parked in roads that are for acesss only when there is ample car parking spaces near by .I have a number of times seen traffic wardens in the precinct why are they there when there are no cars down there why dont they do thier do thier job properly and get on the roads on and not in a pedestrianised area”

“Jerry, just what is your point? This is not a court room, you obviously are aware of what the officer is saying, all you are doing is playing on words..At the end of the day, the officer is doing his job by highlighting a problem with the poor standard of driving in the area, something he is paid to do, nothing more nothing less, as for comments about stealth taxes, grow up why don't you, change the record, if you don't want to be fined, simple solution don't break the law. the law is there to make the roads safer, no other reason, slow down, obey the rules of the road and you won't have any arguments, or will you?”

“Aha, Tony, Brumby, actually agrees with me, even though he may think otherwise.

I did not have the time to look up the law but he has obligingly done so and quotes "a vehicle proceeding through the junction must keep to the left of the white circle at the centre of the marking shown in diagram 1003.4, unless the size of the vehicle or the layout of the junction makes it impracticable to do so"

He exposes PC Gardner as being wrong because PC Gardner wrongly states that "it is a legal requirement to pass around the central marked area of all mini roundabouts, unless their vehicle is so large it is incapable of doing so."

The law clearly makes allowance for where not only the size of the vehicle, but also the layout of the junction, makes it "impracticable" - something rather different to PC Gardner's "impossible" - to keep left of the central blob.

The only thing that is unconditionally mandatory at a mini-roundabout is to gve way to traffic from the right.

It appears to me that PC Gardner could be quoting from the Highway Code which on this matter misstates what the law actually demands.

BTW the driving instructor that taught me had retired from police service and was recommended by a very senior police officer.”

“Mini roundabouts were only invented for one reason and that was to save money placing a proper junction or traffic lights. They are dangerous as most people haven't got a clue how to use them and only work on the "I got here first" system. However, now the police have found a use for them (more stealth tax on the motorist) then no doubt they'll be here to stay!”

“Anon, North lincs......if you really do report people for driving over a mini roundabout, maybe you should look at finding a hobby!”
