FOOD: Cranswick plc brought home the bacon in the run-up to Christmas with sales for the quarter up 8 per cent.

A trading statement released yesterday showed underlying turnover in the three months to December 31 was 7 per cent ahead of the same period last year, underpinned by strong volume growth.

Cranswick, which this week revealed it was creating more than 100 jobs in Hull after winning a multimillion pound contract with Asda, said sales growth of bacon, sausages and cooked meat products was particularly strong, while export sales "remained buoyant".

The results included strong sales growth linked to in the company's cooked meats facility in Hull.

This was boosted thanks to an extension of Cranswick's Sutton Fields cooked meats facility in Hull, which was completed ahead of the Christmas trading period and enabled the company to meet rising demand.

The extension also "improved production flows through the factory which has driven efficiency benefits", the company said.
