Crazy decision at Southampton to sack former Scunthorpe boss Nigel Adkins says ex-Iron midfielder Lee Turnbull
FOOTBALL has again proven how unstable and crazy it can be after Southampton dispensed of the services of former Iron boss Nigel Adkins.
It is testament to the job he has done with the Saints that the most prominent figures in the game like Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger were very critical of the manner of the sacking.
Nige has handled almost everything that was thrown his way at Southampton, taking the club from second bottom of League One when he took over to the dizzy heights of the Premier League after successive promotions.
He and his trusted assistant, another Iron legend, Andy Crosby, produced a style of play and performance that was revered by their peers as they stormed through the divisions to the promised land.

The start of this year's challenge was daunting, indeed a trip to reigning league champions Man City was first up.
The early evidence of the season was a typical swashbuckling approach from Nige and Croz, albeit without the points to match the performance.
Surely the remit was to stay in the division from power-crazed owner Nicola Cortese?
It was a feat that was looking evidently more achievable when the Saints were clocking up points on a regular basis since December.
Scoring three at Stoke, winning at Villa and rattling Chelsea's cage at Stamford Bridge with a magnificent 2-2 draw are not the signs of a team in decline.
Indeed, they are the opposite – a team growing into the toughest division in world football and punching above its weight.
Despite this, the axe fell.
Nigel's record of promotions in his relatively short managerial career is phenomenal.
Perhaps at Southampton he was unable to control the controllables, but he will be back in the game stronger for the experience.
Whoever persuades Nige to jump back in the hot seat will get a man of integrity, passion and incredible knowhow, especially when it comes to winning leagues and promotions!

“Just to correct you they were 17th in League One when Nigel took over, not second bottom.
Odds on to take over at Huddersfield. Maybe his sacking by Southampton influenced Hoyle and he has crossed fingers OR he knows something we don't.
However Nige deserves better than being parachuted into every "sleeping giant". He needs to be at a giant.”

“See my article destined for publication in the Iron's next home programme.
Cortese is beyond contempt!”
