Tony Daws: Let's go for three points at Ipswich Town, not one

A NEW man in charge is determined to bring a new attacking approach to Scunthorpe United at Portman Road tomorrow.

Caretaker boss Tony Daws insists the Iron have to be bold and brave in the closing nine games of the season, if they are to have any chance of still escaping the clutches of relegation.

And he is likely to make changes at Ipswich against a team smarting themselves from a 3-0 home defeat in midweek against Watford.

"I will upset one or two players but I am prepared to do that because the team I pick has got to be in the best interests of this club," said Daws.

"I love this club and I desperately want us to stay in the Championship.

"I will do what I feel I have to do to try and achieve that."

The Iron's new caretaker boss knows that is a tall order – but he is not prepared to throw in the towel without a fight.

"We are in trouble, we are four points away from safety," he continued.

"We have got nine games left and we have got to get as many points as we can.

"We can sit back and try and soak things up, but I know from experience when you do that you invariably concede a goal.

"I would rather end up with one point trying to get all three, than end up with none trying to get one.

"As a former striker, I was always better at attacking than defending anyway.

"Maybe we need to be aggressive in our thought process and take the game to them without being naive and leaving ourselves wide open.

"Let's have a real good go and hopefully we can win the game.

"There might be less pressure on me than there was on Ian (Baraclough), but I just think when you are four points adrift, you have got to try and do something about it."

Before they take to the pitch at Portman Road tomorrow, Daws will also have another message for the players.

"I will remind them they are playing for their careers," he said.

"Whoever the next manager is going to be, whether he is sat in the stands tomorrow or not, the players have to make sure they perform."

Daws himself will adopt a tracksuit approach to tomorrow's game.

"That's me, I am a coach not a manager," he declared.

"I enjoy the coaching side of the game. I think I am good at developing players.

"I will be there on the sidelines trying to motivate the team and offering help and advice.

"One thing I always am is honest with players.

"I will tell them if they have done well – and I will tell them if they haven't.

"Training yesterday was good and bright. I think we will get a positive reaction."
