A major dairy company is to close its depot in Scunthorpe and "a small number of redundancies" may result.

Dairy Crest Ltd says that following a review of its depot network and operating costs in the Yorkshire area, it has been decided to cease trading from the Scunthorpe depot by September 29.

"Detailed consultation with all affected individuals will take place, and all efforts will be made to make the transition to their new operating depot as smooth as possible.

"Regrettably, this closure may result in a small number of redundancies, however every effort will be made to secure alternative employment at other local depots.

"We will be entering into immediate consultation with our affected employees and their representatives and will provide a high level of HR support to meet their needs."

“VERY IMPORTANT.. Just to clear up any confusion that this announcement has made. If you are currently recieving deliveries from Dairy Crest you will continue to do so by the same milkman who currently serves you. Dairy Crest are NOT stopping deliveries in Scunthorpe, they are just closing the distribution centre and operating from Rossington near Doncaster. I am a Dairy Crest franchisee and will be getting my produce from Rossington, my rounds delivery days will not change, there may be some variation in the delivery route but everything will continue as it currently does. I speak on behalf of all roundsmen from Scunthorpe depot when I say that the support of our customer network is of paramount importance. Your milkman needs your support. Many thanks Dave Hodgson Roundsman.”

“Dairy Crest own milkandmore.co.uk that does doorstep deliveries at a price, 4 pints of milk £1.99 compared to Lidl 98p or supermarkets 2 x 4 pints for £2, everything milkandmore deliver is to expensive for low income people and most pensioners, payment by Direct Debit so no worry about drivers getting attacked for cash, people today do not need an everyday delivery, with fridges and freezers once or twice a week would work and allow them to cut costs of delivery and then the price of products, why not sell at supermarket prices with a fixed delivery charge. Sad to see places close but every one has had to cut back. Couriers pay home delivery people 50p per package to deliver in local areas with their cars. Royal Mail are even talking about cutting ammount of deliveries a week, if people want same day or next day it's available at a price.”

“"Nobody is safe in the face of global domination by the big boys"? Really?

It's a fact that more and more people choose to buy their milk from supermarkets. Doorstep deliveries are no longer wanter by the majority and these businesses are doomed to close.”

“I'd like to thank the depot and it's workers for providing a service over the years, sadly not good enough to compete with the superstores and their pricing policies though :(
