A BURST sewage pipe which spewed raw waste over a Scunthorpe park is causing stench and disruption for local residents.

It is the second incident to hit Moors Road residents in three months, affecting the children's play area and a bus stop used by elderly people.

Resident Geoff LeVoguer, 64, of Edgemere, said: "The tankers are back with a vengeance, lined up all along Moors Road.

"There was fetid water calf-deep in the middle of the park. A couple of guys with sweeping brushes were sweeping water down the drain.

"The pumping station is belching horrible smells out. We can't sit in the garden or have our windows open."

It is understood an outgoing sewage pipe from the pumping station burst, causing sewage to seep out.

The latest incident is not connected with the station's failure in May, when the pumping station became clogged with discarded nappies, kitchen wipes and cooking grease, causing a "catastrophic failure".

Mr LeVoguer added: "The play park is there and no-one's using it because of the pumping station.

"Lots of elderly people live here and they walk round to the Berkeley circle as the stench is too great at the bus stop.

"The pump is just not adequate for the workload. We need a new pumping station."

The existing pumping station helps sewage reach the treatment works.

A spokeswoman for Severn Trent Water said: "There's been damage on one of our sewer pipes.

"The pipe leaving the pumping station has burst. We've isolated that section of pipes, so the tankers are having to take the waste away while they're repairing it.

"The damage could be erosion or wear and tear. We will investigate once it's repaired."

Environmental Health officers at North Lincolnshire Council said they had not received any complaints about the latest incident.

They said they were pleased Severn Trent was working to fix the broken pipe.

Residents said they thought Severn Trent had made a genuine effort to alleviate the problem, but were disheartened by the latest incident.

Severn Trent maintains a 46,000km system of pipes.

The company serves more than eight million people from the Bristol Channel to the Humber and from mid-Wales to the East Midlands.
